Pattern help

I am having issues with this soap Sleeve Pattern. This pattern only starts with 18 stitches and the psso rows I am assuming are decreases. Does this seem right? I am trying to figure out why you would want to decrease? Any insight?

For the Beige Soap Sleeve -

Needles - one pair of 4.00mm, UK8, US6.

Cast on 18 stitches.

Row 1 - (K1, P1), repeat to end.

Row 2 - (P1, K1), repeat to end

Row 3 - as Row 1

Row 4 - as Row 2

Row 5 - K1,P1,K1, k2, (yo, sl1, k2, psso the 2k sts), repeat to last 4 stitches, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1

Row 6 - P1, K1, P1, purl to last 3 stitches, K1, P1, K1

Row 7 - K1, P1, K1, K1, (sl1, k2, psso the 2k sts, yo), repeat to last 5 stitches, K2, P1, K1, P1

Row 8 - P1, K1, P1, purl to last 3 stitches, K1, P1, K1

Repeat Rows 5-8 until work will fit around liquid soap, ending with a wrong side (purl) row, then finish off with the buttonhole band as follows -

Row 1 - (K1, P1), repeat to end.

Row 2 - P1, K1, P1, cast off 2 stitches, continue in moss stitch to last 5 stitches, cast off 2 stitches, K1, P1, K1

Row 3 - K1, P1, K1, cast on 2 stitches, (P1, K1) x4, cast on 2 stitches, P1, K1, P1

Row 4 - (P1, K1), Repeat to end

Cast off in moss stitch.

Hi. It looks like each round that has a psso (dec), there is also a corresponding yo so you’re not really changing the stitch count.

Rcubed is right - the yarn overs and psso help form the sleeve’s texture. Yarn over is an increase, psso is a decrease, so you essentially increase and decrease at the same rate through the row.
It does look really nice, I must say!

Thank you!! I do have another question though…for rows 5 and 7 that says psso the 2k stitches, there is only one yarn over. So am I thinking right that I still am decreasing?

The psso only decreases one stitch. Even though it is passing over two stitches, they both stay on the needles. The stitch that is “lost” is the slip 1 which is being passed over them.

Here’s a video showing that part:

YO = increase 1
sl1, k2, psso = decrease 1

Also, more for future reference than anything else really, some stitch patterns do decrease across the row then increase again on the next - granite stitch is one that does this.
