The pattern says: cast on 4 Stitches and work in the round. This is followed by, on separate lines:
Kfb
Kfb
K1, kfb around =24
K2, kfb around =32
This goes on incrementally to
K5, kfb, around =52
K 4 rounds
Does this mean I knit front and back in each of the four stitches for 2 rows? And then K1, knit font and back repeating that for the entire row? The pattern doesn’t include the commas until K4, kfb, around =48. Even so, I can’t get this to come out to 52 stitches. Any advice?
Welcome!
Yes, repeat the instructions around.
I come out with 56sts.
What is the name of the pattern?
Read ahead and see how many sts are needed for the next rounds. Maybe that will help figure out how many you need.
I would rewrite it in this way:
KFB (8 sts)
KFB (16 sts)
(K1, KFB) repeat pat around (24 sts)
(K2, KFB) repeat pat around (32 sts)
That helps me see what pattern is repeating.
I can also figure out there are 8 repeats each round (after the first increase round).

Thank you very much. That makes sense to me.
Thank you. I appreciate the help. The pattern is called Luis the Long Puppy.
There are a couple of projects with potentially helpful comments on the pattern:
