Pattern help with turning and decreasing

Hi there,

I’m relatively new to knitting and am knitting a babies sweater.

I’m working the front and have been working in stocking stitch until my work was a certain length. The pattern advise to end in a purl row. Right…got that far. Now I’m up to shaping the neck and the pattern says this exactly…

SHAPE NECK - Next row - K23, turn.

(Now, from what I can gather I literally knit 23 stitches and turn my knitting around so the wrong side is facing me. Do I then purl to the end of the row? The pattern then says this…

***Dec at neck edge in every row 4 times, then in alt rows until 17 sts rem. Cont in stocking st until work measures same as Back to beg of shoulder shaping, ending with a purl row.

So, from what I can gather, my work is now facing the right (knitted side). Decrease to me is knitting 2 stitches together. I’m not sure what it’s referring to when it says ‘dec at neck edge every 4 times’?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

Heidi

Work across the 23 sts, turn, then do the first dec on the WS row. Finish the row, turn, work the RS, doing a k2tog at the neck edge. Turn and dec on the WS, work to the end of the row, turn again and k2tog at the end of the RS row. That’s the `dec at neck edge every row 4 times’. From now on, you just do the decs on the RS rows until you have 17 sts.

Thanks Sue, this post got me back on track. I cast on 60 stitches to another needle to have a practice run. Not having shaped a neck before, it was hard to picture what the pattern wanted me to do.

So, I had a practice run, and it definitely looks like a neck. Thanks again for taking the time to help.
