hi - i’m making this hat, but am having a little bit of a hard time how to make these “vertical scrunches” which create the bobbles.
so, you do a little ribbing at the bottom, then you start the pattern which says:
Row 6-right side-K3, *drop right st and ravel for 4 rows, insert needle in 5th row below and under the 4 raveled loops, K this st tog. with the 4 loops, K3; repeat from * to end.
my questions:
1 - so, i knit 3, then drop the last stitch that i just knitted, right? (why knit it in the first place then?)
2 - how do you k the dropped stitch to the 4 loops? i understand the principle but how do you actually knit 5 loops together at once?
I think you knit the st you’re dropping to keep it in line with the row.
As for knitting the dropped part, you’ll put your needle in between rows 4 and 5 of the unraveled part, then just wrap your yarn as usual for a knit and and pull it through that same space. It will gather up the 4 unravelled rows and create the scrunchie part (and will probably look weird til you get a few rows into it) and give you the st back that you just dropped (which matches with their ending st count of 23 st before your last row).
thanks for the help!
Jan in CA: that is the actual pattern; just trying to understand it.
krazy4kats: great! thanks…so, basically i’m knitting a stitch, dropping it and unraveling it 4 stitches down, and putting the unraveled loop back on my left needle and knitting it again?
No…after you unravel, you’ll put your right needle in between the horizontal yarns made by the 4th and 5th unravelled stitches, wrap your yarn around the right needle like you usually do to do a knit stitch and pull that loop through the same space you went in at - the new stitch is on your right needle and stays there, then k3 like the pattern states.
It’s kind of like picking up stitches, where you just poke the needle in and draw the loop through. You’re making a new knit stitch that will pull all those unravelled strands together in the middle, so they’ll kind of look like a bow tie.
