Pattern help -RICO 469

Hi, started knitting again recently after 30 years!
Have been knitting the rico jacket, 469 quite happily til I got to the right front. It’s the increase I don’t understand. Firstly how do I know which is the shaped shoulder edge and I am just confused about which rows I am increasing on. Also, keeping pattern correct during increases, is there a technique for this? Thanks!!

The first row after the cast on is a RS row. Place a marker at the end of this row. That will mark the shoulder seam. The beginning of the row is the lower edge and end of row the shoulder. The increases at the shoulder edge are initially at the beginning of the WS rows so that’s the edge with the marker.

Work the cable pattern as given with the double increases on rows 2,4,6 and 8.

For All Sizes:
Instead of increasing in the pattern rows (the double increases) that you have just worked you will now be increasing on the following rows.
For the 3rd size, call the next row under For All Sizes, row 1. Increase at the shoulder edge (same edge you have been increasing) on rows 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 and 13. Then increase on rows 15,17 and 19, then row 23 and finally row 29 and 35. That will take you from 155sts to 174sts.

In repeating the 8 row pattern and keeping track of these inc rows, it helps to write out a table with the cable pattern rows 1-8 repeated down column one and the increase rows 1-35 in the second column. You can then check the rows off as you work them.

The best way I’ve found to work the increases into the pattern is to make the increases as knit sts and then on the next row, work them in pattern. Look at the pattern across the row and decide if the increase should be a knit or purl stitch in order to extend the pattern. If it’s part of a cable cross, then you might wait for the next cable cross to work the cable rather than having a cable cross at the very edge.
An alternative is to work a slightly smaller cable, say 3sts crossing over 2sts rather than 3sts over 3sts.
You can also account for the increased sts in the pattern as written but it always seems easier to look at the pattern on the needles and work the new sts in that way.
