Pattern Help please?

Hi all, :slight_smile:
I’ve followed lots of patterns before but always the basic K, P, M1, De/increase stitches. I’ve given myself a real challange and have branched out into knitting stitches I’ve never done before.
I am currently knitting a Matinee coat for a newborn. I have done the first ten rows wich were easy enough to understand, but the next row I don’t get.
The row is:

1st row-K8sts, *K1, (K2tog, yfwd) 3 times, K1, (yfwd, S1, K1, PSSO) 3 times, repeat from * tl last 9 stitches K9sts.

I just want to clarify what that means. To me it’s:

Knit 8 stitches, k1, k2tog, yarn foward (Same as Yarn Over?), K1, k2tog, yarn foward, K1, k2tog, yarn foward, K1, yarn foward, slip one stitch from left needle to right, knit 1, then pass the slipped stitch over the one you just knitted, K1, yarn foward, slip one stitch from left needle to right, knit 1, then pass the slipped stitch over the one you just knitted, K1, yarn foward, slip one stitch from left needle to right, knit 1, then pass the slipped stitch over the one you just knitted, reapeat from * until 9 stiches remain, knit them.

Or is it:

Knit 1, knit 2 together, yarn foward, knit 2 together, yarn foward, knit 2 together, yarn foward, knit 1, Yarn foward, slip 1, knit one, pass slipped stitch over, Yarn foward, slip 1, knit one, pass slipped stitch over, Yarn foward, slip 1, knit one, pass slipped stitch over, repeat from * until 9 stitches remain, knit them.

I’d be very greatful if someone could confirm or correct me if I have it wrong. Thanks for reading, and thank you in advance if you can help/reply. :slight_smile:

That was a little hard to read typed out that way so I separated it in sections… If I’m reading this correctly, YES this is what you do. You repeat from the * as many times at it says.

EDIT: Just copying instructions down and saw how awful that looked and must be to understand! I must appologise, I proof read my post, bar the instructions obviously. My copy and paste skills really let me down there! It is a bit of a muddle isn’t it? Thanks for trying to make sense of it and helping me anyway. :slight_smile: My only ecxuse is that I’m very tired! :stuck_out_tongue:

I think the k1 isn’t included in the repeat 3 times, just the Ktog, YO. So it’s –

Knit 8 stitches,
knit 1, knit 2 together, yarn foward (Same as yarn over?),
knit 2 together, yarn foward,
knit 2 together, yarn foward,
Then —

K1, yfwd, s1, K1, psso
yfwd, s1, K1, psso
yfwd, s1, K1, psso

Then repeat the whole sequence after the first k8 until you have 9 sts left and k9.

The k1 was inside the * so I thought it was included. So maybe it’s the part in the parentheses only? If that is the case it would trip me up for sure as I always do what is after the asterisk. :??

Thanks for your reply Suzeeq. I know I didn’t make understanding it easy from my mess.
I always thought you reapet the bit in the brackets how ever many times it says after the brackets. Like, K1 P1 (K2Tog) 3 times, then repeat, would be this:

K1
P1
K2tog
K2tog
K2tog

K1
P1
K2tog
K2tog
K2tog

?
I’m afraid I can’t post a link to the actual pattern as it’s not on-line. I brought it from a lady on Ebay though and it has lots of pictures of the made artical on the listing. Would it be allowed to post a link to the listing to help you all see what it should look like? (Warning if I do! :smiley: This lady has ADORABLE baby patterns!)

Yep, whatever’s in the brackets/parentheses is repeated 3 times. The * in front of the k1 is to show where to start where it says “repeat from * to last 9sts…” Then you include the k1 in the whole sequence, but only once.

You don’t need to edit the post. It’s alright to post the few lines that you’re having problems with. Seeing that helps give context to your problem. As long as the entire pattern is not posted, a few rows of it is okay.

Ok, just got in touch with the author and she said it was ok to type the line, so I’ll go re-edit so it’ll make sense again.
