Pattern Help Please!

Hi!

I was wondering if someone could please help me with a pattern I am working on. I have some kills with knitting (socks and basic knits) and I have already failed on one cardigan but I will not let it defeat me!

I found this pattern online (https://www.yarnspirations.com/gb/patons-long-weekend-knit-cardigan--long--lo----xs-s/PAK0129-007816V.html) and fell in love. However, I am now on the first sleeve and starting my decreases but for some reason, I cannot wrap my head around what this means -

All Versions: Shape neck:
Next row: (RS). K1. ssk (neck edge). Pat to end of row.
Work 5 (5-5-5-3-3) rows even in pat.
Cont in pat, dec 1 st at neck edge on next and every following 4th row to 52 sts, then every following
2nd row to 48 sts.
Cont even in pat until work from beg measures same length as Back to shoulder, ending on a RS row.

I have complete the ssk and contined in the pattern of Basket Rib Pat. When I look into the next few rows to see what I have to do I cannot work out how to get from my current 70 sts to the 52sts remaining only ssk on every 4th row, surely that is only 4 sts gone which will take me to 66sts remaining?

Then you look at the until work from the begining measures the same length as back to shoulder ending on a right side row. I am looking at the sleeve from the start to the end of my decreases and then knitting in pattern until it is the same length and then continuing with the shaping of the shoulder in the next part of the pattern? -

Shape shoulder: Next row: (WS).
Cast off 10 (10-12-12-13-15) sts. Pat to end of row.
Next row: Work even in pat. Rep last 2 rows once more.
Next row: Cast off 7 (9-9-11-11-14) sts. Pat to end of row.
Next row: Work even in pat. Cast off rem 7 (9-9-11-11-14) sts.

If anyone could please help me decode this as I would to be able to wear an item that I have made that isn’t a pair of socks or a scarf!

Thanks,
Stacey

Hi Stacey, I’m a bit confused about why your pattern says to shape neck if you are working the first sleeve  Usually you do the neck decreases on the fronts of a cardigan or jumper, are you sure you are looking at the right place in the instructions?
It’s usually called armhole shaping, shape armholes (… or some variation) for the sleeves.

Okay, I downloaded the pattern and this instruction is for the right front,3rd size. After working the 1st Shape Neck decrease, you are asked to work 5 rows in pattern then, continuing in pattern, you decrease 1st at the neck edge on the next row and every following 6th row until you have 52sts on your needles(this means work 5 rows, decrease on the next row. Repeat until you have 52sts left)
Then you decrease every following 4th row until you have 42 sts left, so work 3 rows then decrease 1 st at the neck edge on the next row.
There are only increases on the sleeve until you reach the correct amount of sts and length, then you cast off.
Hope this helps, ask again if there’s anything else
Linda

Hi Linda!

Yep, you are right, it is the right front, no idea why I put sleeve (hurry up home time!).

Thank you for taking a look into this. I am knitting in the 2/3XL which is the dark purple colour in the pattern.

I have K1. SSK and then worked 3 rows in pattern.

Does at neck edge be the part closest to the neck so the right side of the RS of the work? (meaning the 1st sts of that rs row?)

So now I need to decrease at neck edge every 4th row until i get 52 stitches?

1 - Knit
2 - Purl
3 - K1 sl1p for row
4 - DECREASE 1 k1 Sl1Pwyif K1
5 - Knit
6 - Purl
7 - K1 sl1p for row
8 - DECREASE 1 k1 Sl1Pwyif K1

Like that until I get 52 sts?

This is so confusing :frowning:

The neck edge is the side where you worked that first SSK.
So sorry to confuse you, in the size you are doing you decrease every 4th row working the pattern as you have been doing all along until you have 52 sts on your needle, then every other row to 48 sts. Keep an eye on your pattern while doing the decreases so everything lines up as it should.
You’re doing really well, keep going and you’ll soon be wearing this lovely cardigan :grinning:
