I thought I was a fairly experienced knitter, but a pattern for a ribbed shrug has me stumped right at the start. I cast on 2 stitches and 1st row (wrong side) P2. By the 8th row I have 7 stitches and the 9th row (which I presume is also a wrong side row) is the problem.
Sl 1, P2, K2, P2, TURN cast on 30 stitches, TURN with wrong side facing, work across sts from right side of neck as folls - P2, K2, P3 … 44 stitches. 44 stitches is 7 more than the original 7 and the 30 cast on, and I can’t seem to get the correct side either.
Row 10 is straight forward.
Thanks for any help

It seems like an excess of TURN directions. Row 9 is wrong side, cast on 30, work the p2 k2 p3… directions. Is this shrug being knit from one side to the other side rather than from bottom up or top down?
I’m puuzzled about the st number too. You started with 2 sts and then increased on some of the next rows. Increases at one end of the row or on each side of the row?
I’m trying to think this through too…
row 9 (ws): Sl 1, P2, K2, P2, TURN
row 10 (rs): cast on 30 stitches, TURN
row 11 (ws): with wrong side facing, work across sts from right side of neck as folls - P2, K2, P3 … 44 stitches.
By turning and then numbering each “new” row I can keep the ws/rs straight. But, the CO 30 would have to be a knit or cable CO given the direction the work is now turned and location of the yarn (on LH needle). If you did this and put the new sts on the LH needle, then when you turned the work, you couldn’t work row 11 as working yarn would be on RH needle. If you CO and put new sts on the RH needle, then you would turn work and row 11 would only work the 30 new CO sts to the end. Which is fine, but you are correct I have no idea how they got to 44, as 7+30 is 37.
Looking at the photo on your pattern, does it seem like the shrug has a small left front panel and right front panel on either side of the neck? Then it might make sense that you have 7 sts on either side of the 30, which would give you 44, but how you get them is a mystery, unless you CO 37.
What’s the pattern, it would help if we could see what’s going on?
Here is a picture (I hope). This is the left side of back neck we are talking about. After armhole shaping it is put onto circular needles (Beg collar) and picks up stitches along right side of back neck shaping.
Is sounding more and more like I should find another pattern!

One other thing: Are there any sts on a holder for the right side of the neck? Are these the sts for “work across sts from right side of neck as folls - P2, K2, P3” and could the underlined be the missing 7 sts?
Thats the answer, thanks salmonmac.
