OK, here I am again with this sweater, Mallard.
I have the armholes deep enough and would really prefer to use the 3-needle bind-off at the shoulder seams but can’t figure out how to do it on this one! As you can see, the armholes are formed by simply attaching another ball of yarn and working each front piece and the back separately. The directions have you bind off each section separately, then the front is to be folded and seamed to the back. It looks like it will take some serious juggling and moving of stitches to another needle? Unless someone can see something I can’t and offer a way to do the 3-needle bind-off?
Thanks for any ideas!
Yes, you will have to juggles some sts.
Best bet is to start with the back section. Work X sts (to match front st shoulder count. BO center sts to last X sts (assuming no shaping required). Work X sts to end. You will now have two sets of live sts on either side of the back which can be paired up with the corresponding front shoudler sts for your three needle BO (or Kitchner, if you dare
)
You’re right that you need to move some sts but it’s not so much fiddling around.
Slip the sts for the right shoulder (on the right in the photo) to another needle (or to the needle at the other end of the current cable) and use the yarn attached to the back to seam. If you slip to another needle, it can be any smaller size.
Then slip the sts on the left needle (on the left in photo) to the right needle and use the yarn attached to the left shoulder to seam. You were so clever to leave yarn attached to each piece just in case you needed it. Mmm, Mmm, beautifully done in a lovely color.
Thanks, salmonmac! That makes sense and I’ll give it a try. I wasn’t at all sure I’d like this cardi the way the armholes are done but after this much time and work I’d sure like to get the shoulders put together and at least see if it fits!
