Pattern Help - LTK Afghan Square 21 - Florentine Frieze

I’m working on my first big knitting project, Barbara Walker’s Learn-to-Knit Afghan. I’ve done the first 5 squares, and a couple in the Twist-Stitch section. I tried starting on one of the slip stitch patterns last night, thinking it would be easy, but I’m completely confused.

Rows 1-4 were no problem, but the instructions for Row 5 say:

k1, * sl 1 wyib, and here’s the confusing bit - insert needle from front under loose strand of Row 2 and knit next st, sl 1 wyib, k1, rep from *.

Which needle? Right or left? And do I just slip in onto the right needle, or knit it? If so, how? On the next row, does it create another stitch? Help! :wall:

As you work your current row, there should be a strand of yarn where you slipped with the yarn in back from the previous row–this will now be on the front.

Put your right needle under it and then work the next stitch on the left needle. The strand will be lifted up around the stitch that you knit land look like an inverted V.

I’m on this same square and stuck on the same row and stitch as Pokey. When I try the suggestion in Ingrid’s reply to her, I get an extra stich on the right needle: i.e., the strand from a couple rows below stays on the right needle, making an extra stitch. I can’t manage to make the lower strand “lifted up around the stitch that you knit.” What am I doing wrong?

Put the right needle under the strand that’s lifted when you knit the next stitch. When you pull the loop through, pull it through both the stitch and the strand that’s lifted.

Thanks, Ingrid, for your quick and truly helpful tip. I’ve got the row going fine now, thanks to you.
