Pattern confusion--can someone help?

I am wanting to knit the vest Fence. I am planning to knit the size 36 long version. I have read and reread though this pattern more than twice and I get more and more confused over the order. There is a section called Left Neck and Right Neck, but then further down in the pattern for the section Sizes 32(36, 40) those same section titles appear again. However, the instructions are different. Do I do both of these sections or just the one under my size? If both, what order do I do them in? Also, under the section called Back Armholes, there is a sentence that says
Back: AT THE SAME TIME, work Back Neck and Shoulder Shaping

I see the Back Neck section but not the Shoulder Shaping. Where is the Shoulder Shaping?

Also, there is something called a “selvage st” that is worked at the end of some rows for the front and back. What is that?

If anyone can help, I would be so appreciative. Thanks for reading.

Just your size…lets not get greedy…LOL

Often times, they sneek shaping in on you…it looks to me thats what the designer has done here.
Rows 4, 8, 14 (Dec Row): Work until 2 sts rem, k2tog.
this might be it. someone confirm?

when you work with a pattern and it has to be sewn together, like this one…the “selvage st” is the stitch that you use to sew the pieces together. Often times its used so you dont disturb the pattern repeats when you sew.

hope this helps

That helps so much. Why does the pattern have the left and right on there twice? Is the selvage stitch an extra stitch I do at the end of each row it is on? If so, would it be a knit stitch?

The selvedge stitch is just the stitch at the ends of the row, you don’t add one, it’s just outside the pattern stitch repeat and is in the pattern. The Left and Right front necks are not really given twice, there’s just different instructions for the sets of smaller and larger sizes.

Thanks. I think I understand now.
