Pattern calls for one weight but

I would like to order my yarn but my pattern calls for Super Bulky yarn but the place I would like to order from doesn’t have any I like in that weight. Is it possible to combine two different weights to equal the super bulky? Or two of the same?

2 strands of DK or light worsted should about equal a super bulky.

How is that determined? Just by swatching? Wraps per inch? And when you do WPIs, what are you wrapping it on?

Yes, any of the above. You can use anything to wrap to determine wpi, a pencil, a needle… just wrap around and measure one inch, then count (the double strands, not the single ones). You can swatch and see if that gets your gauge.
