Patons Rumor Yarn "Manly Scarf" pattern help

I’ve promised my brother over and over that I’d make him a scarf for Christmas. I found the Patons Rumor yarn on sale for about 3.00 ea in a color which he really liked. I like how the yarn is soft.

Anyways, I’m wondering, what’s a good “manly” pattern? My brother wants the scarf wide, as well as long of course. He’s in his early twenties. Right now he has a scarf which is about purl 5 or 6, knit 1 and repeats (from what he’s described to me over the phone). He doesn’t like that it curls.

I’ve looked at a few patterns, and he wants it pretty simple, but I’d like to do something more than just k2 p2, or something like that.

If anyone has made a scarf for the boyfriend/hubby/son, etc. I could use some help!

My so called scarf looks sort of woven and looks good in a single color, though it will be better if you use size 11 or 13 needles with Rumor. http://www.sheepinthecity.prettyposies.com/archives/000079.html

I’m wondering, the pattern shows that the yarn was doubled (Skien Peruvian Tweed 100% Superfine Alpaca) on size 8 needles. Would I need to do the same thing since Rumor is an Alpaca though it’s considered Bulky with 10 needles? Or should I not double up?

no, don’t double. her gauge doubled is still more st/inch than yours. If you cast on her 32 stitches, your scarf will be wider than hers (which you might like). if you decide to cast on fewer, it looks like you can remove by multiples of 6.

Also, even though the yarn is doubled it still wont be as thick as the yarn you want to use. So substitute size 10 or 10.5 instead of the the 8s with the bulky yarn. And you’ll definitely decrease the st number by 6.

Okay, after reading both posts, I must say, I’m a little :??. I haven’t been knitting/going to class as often as I should, as I’ve been helping a friend move, and now it’s my turn to move. So, time has been limited. I thought though with the Thanksgiving Holiday approaching, that I’d have time to start this.

My brother wants a wide scarf. His current scarves, from the pictures he’s sent me, have at least 20+ stitches cast on, so I think that the 32 would be good for him. He’s constantly telling me he wants it long and wide.

If I were to follow her instructions, and do the 32, would I continue with the size 10/10.5 needles?

And if after casting on the 32 and I think it’s too wide, if I decrease by 6, should I use the 8 needles? Is that how I’m reading this?

And could I assume that “Slip one with yarn in back” is slip one knit wise. And “Slip one with yarn in front” is purl?

I just wanted to make sure.

You’ll want to use the larger needles with your yarn. Go ahead and cast on the 32 stitches and knit a few rows - see if the size looks ok to you. If you decide it is too wide, you’ll have to start over and cast on 26 stitches to keep the pattern.
And yes, that’s how I would slip the stitches.

I’ve started working on this, and I’m having the hardest time with this stupid yarn! I don’t know what it is…maybe it’s the heather, with the two colors somewhat intertwined together, but it’s so difficult and almost uncomfortable.

My brother loves browns, and his jacket is brown. But…I’m wondering, is there some good yarn that I could pick up at a local yarn shop? I’ve got a 6 hour train ride on Wednesday and I’m wanting to get working on the scarf then.

I’m going to keep knitting away…but…this isn’t looking how I thought it would…

Sometimes really great looking yarn doesn’t work out in the pattern you choose for it. :frowning:

I’m wondering, I’ve never really had problems with some of the Lion Brand Yarn, and they have some nice dark browns, and carmel/tan ones. I’m thinking I may try and intertwine the two and double up.

If I were to do that, what type of yarn should I use? Sport weight or Worested? I’m looking at the Wool-Ease right now. If I were to use something like that…what size needles should I use if I were to double up with two different colors?

I’m so sad. My brother liked that yarn. But, it was a little too soft/fuzzy too for a guy.

Hmm for worsted doubled, I’d go with size 13 or 15. Sportweight doubled you could do 10.5s or 11s.

Thanks! I don’t want it to be too bulky, but I think that unless I don’t find something similar with two browns woven in with each other, that I’ll have to double it up.

One random question, if I wanted the darker brown to show up more than the tan/carmel color (whatever I pick), should I get the darker brown in a heavier weight and the tan in say the sport weight?

That my work. If you have the two yarns side by side at the store, pull a few inches out of the middle of them and twist them together loosely to see how they look.
