Patons Gromit Pattern

I am hoping you may be able to help me, I have a pattern which I believe was an original Paton knitting pattern and I am having trouble with the knitting of the hands and fingers. I think there is something incorrect about the pattern and I’m hoping someone can explain where I am going wrong.
As you will see from the pattern for dividing for fingers I start with 20sts, the next row has me increase and work on 16 sts. leaving 7 sts on the needle. Next is to work on 8 of the 16 to form finger.
Middle finger states 8 sts on RH needle rejoin yarn to LH needle and K1, inc. sts on LH needle which since there are only 7 sts to work with would make 10 sts after increase however pattern states 12 sts.
Then index finger states knit 4 sts. from RH need le with 4sts left on LH needle??? There are 8 on LH needle.
When you look at the picture of Gromit the finger look great so I’m really confused.
I do hope someone can give me the correct way to knit these fingers.

You start with 20sts then use 13sts for the first two fingers (7sts held out for now). The 13sts are increased to 16 and 8sts are used for the first finger.
The right hand needle still has 8sts on it. Now you are going to use 3sts of the 7 held sts for the middle finger. Start with 8sts on right hand needle, k2, inc in a stitch to give you 12sts on the right hand needle. Of the original 7 held sts, you’ve now used 3sts and 4sts remain on hold. Work the middle finger on the 12sts.
(The following instructions refer back to the asterisk for the first finger so you’ll only use 8 of the 12 for the middle finger leaving 4sts for the third finger plus the 4 remaining held sts.)

Would you please crop the photo of the pattern to just the columns for the fingers? We can’t post large portions of patterns on the forum due to designer copyright.

Please see screenshots of pattern and finished hand.

Thank you.
Does the pattern make sense now or is there still a problem?

Thank you for the explanation, I’ll give it a try.

Let us know how it goes. Good luck with the figure. It’s adorable.

I’m stuck on exactly the same thing. I tried it, and ended up with the thumb shaping at both ends, and the middle finger knitted, which made the rest of the instructions impossible, as the two remaining fingers were on different needles. Also, I can’t get my head around how 3 fingers, with thumbs at either side, could be sewn together to make a hand with 3 fingers and one thumb. I’ve pulled out my knitting back to just after shaping for the thumb, so have 20 stitches now, and have mapped out a sketch following the instructions on paper, and I still can’t work it out. I’m hoping someone worked it out and could explain it in a way I understand, because I’m not understanding from the instructions LOL.

Welcome to KH!

I’ll try it again and post photos along the way. The idea if I remember is to fold the hand so that the two thumbs come together to form one.

Work the middle finger (the one worked on the center sts), the finger at the end opposite to the thumb.

Now your going to fold out that middle finger and join the 8sts on the right hand needle to 2sts plus an increase in a third stitch on the left hand needle.

This is going to eventually allow a fold which joins the two thumbs.

Give this a try and see if it makes sense. If not come back and let us know or let us know either way!

Oh, that would be amazing. Thank you. If I can see how it’s meant to go, I might be in with a fighting chance.

See if the photos above help. (post #8)

Aaaah! Yes! That makes sense now, thank you. I had got to exactly that point, but the part where you fold the middle finger down was the bit that was missing in my brain to make it work. You’re a superstar. x
