Paloma Wrap Jacket

This is a simple pattern but I’m now thinking about it too much I’m confused. Knitting the Right Front the instructions read "cont until there are 51 sts on the right hand needle, so ending with a wrong side. NEXT
(buttonhole) row (right side) K1 [p1 k1] 5 times, p2tog, yrn, [p1 k1] to end.
All sts have now been taken into pattern.
My dilemma is once I have the 51sts on the right needle do I cont. to complete that row or do I turn and continue with the pattern? Because The button holes are in different positions if I turn.

Hi and welcome to KH. At first read I thought you were either decreasing or increasing and so the entire row should be 51 sts. What comes before this?

Hi, and thank you for your reply - so fast! I’ve cast on 61sts.
1st ROW: (rs) k1 [p1 k1] to end.
2nd ROW p7, turn
3rd ROW Sl 1 [p1 k1] to end
4th ROW p11’ turn
5th ROW As 3rd row
Working 2 more rows into pattern on every wrong side row, cont. until there are 51 sts. on the rh needle…

I think you’re doing short rows. Can you link to your pattern? I couldn’t find it, someone else might. If you can’t link to it, where did you get it? Is it in a book or magazine?

I have it in a book Debbie Bliss Paloma.

The ‘51 sts on the right hand needle’ row is a wrong side row and the ‘NEXT (buttonhole) row’ is a right side row, so once you have 51 stitiches on your right needle turn your work and you should be good to go.

It may be this jacket. The buttonhole placement is easier to see in this project.

I agree, turn once you have the 51sts on the righthand needle.

Okay…so the button hole will be in a different place to the left hand side? I did turn once I had the 51 sts on the rh needle but was confused the button hole was further in compared to the LHS.

It may well be that the button and buttonhole aren’t located symmetrically on this jacket but the directions do imply a turn after 51sts.
From the projects on Ravelry, it appears that knitters have interpreted this differently however. Is there another buttonhole on the lefthand side or do you have a button placement there?
