Packing to go to Japan

I go away on Tuesday and i have not packed my suitcase yet.
I hate packing and i have no idea what to take with me.
Has anybody ben to Japan, particularly Tokyo or Yokohama in July before and can advise me on what is suitable clothing.
I am particualry unsure since from the weather reports i have seen the temperature is in the mid 20s (Celcius) and the humidity is over 70%.
I think i need to have some smartish clothes with me for when i am at the uni doing research (i get the impression that the dress code for that sort of thing is a bit smarter than the jeans and t-shirt i would wear in England) but i just dont know.

ANy tips or advice?

From what I have seen online, they basically suggest wearing what you feel comfortable in. But you want to be sure you look very clean and neat. So if your jeans are very worn, or have holes, get a new pair. Same with shirts.

Overall everyone tends to look freshly cleaned and ironed, but still comfortable. They have alot of the same fashions as us westerners do, just generally seem to be alot neater about it.

If you haven’t yet, try googling tips for Japan living, there are some very interesting points about etiquette, and some about clothing.

Not sure if you are going as a student, or going to work… General business attire is expected if you are working. If you are unsure, you can have a base outfit that can easily be dressed up or down, by adding or subtracting an item or two…

I hope you have fun on your trip, this sounds very exciting.

It is HOT and humid in Japan in July. Take mix/match clothing-- they tend to wear a lot of black… even in summer. So, a pair of black pants and/or skirt will work very well.

For the most part-- you don’t see a lot of people wearing old ratty clothing about-- of course, some of the 20 something college age do wear the punk/funky type of clothing.

I have visited Tokyo and have lived in Asia for many years.

I’ll be moving to Okinawa next September. It’s more of a “tropical” part of Japan, so I don’t know how much advice I could give you on clothing. Having grown up in tropical Mexico, I know lot’s of breathable clothes.

How long are you going to be there?

Welcome to “THE ROCK!” I lived there for 3 years and loved it-- great weather and it is so beautiful!

I would suggest layers. So if it is cooler in the mornning or evening, you can take off a layer when it warms up.

I’ve never been to Tokyo. I lived in Okinawa; lots of beaches, but never the places you are going to.

Man, when i pack…EVERYTHING comes with it
my friends and family always complain, but better to be safe then
sorry!

Hope you have a safe trip!
