Update (March 30):

the FDA have found a substance called melamine in the wheat gluten of recalled products, and not the aminopterin, as earlier suspected by the New York Foods Laboratory.

Menu Foods, Inc. has identified the potentially contaminated products on the Internet at www.menufoods.com/recall. The product listing was expanded and updated as of March 23, and consumers who have any of these products should immediately stop feeding them to their pets. Dogs or cats who have consumed the suspect feed and show signs of kidney failure (such as loss of appetite, lethargy and vomiting) should consult with their veterinarian. Menu Foods, Inc. is notifying retailers by telephone and mail and is arranging for the return of all recalled products.

FDA is conducting an investigation and working with Menu Foods, Inc. to ensure the effectiveness of the recall. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-866-895-2708. The last link is for IAMS. This is the brand I normally use. They say that Eukanuba and IAMS Dry food are not at all affected by the recall.

Egad! :pout: Luckily my pets don’t eat wet food. Well, the cats do, but it is I who makes it wet (so they don’t get flustered and eat it too fast)

I heard about that yesterday.

I was all freaked out because my cat only eats wet food. Luckily, those aren’t the kinds we feed him so he is safe.

I’ve been scared out of my mind, even though the food we feed our cats isn’t on the list. I just keep thinking about how much they trust us, and would eat anything we give them, and what if we had killed them. Not meaning to, of course, but still…In fact, I’ve wondered if I should try to find a recipe, and make thier food myself.

I may be overreacting. I suffer from anxiety and depression, and forgot to take my meds last night. Some of this worry could be my illness, but I just am so scared that one day, I’ll be the one to discover that I’ve fed my cats bad food that needs to be recalled.

This is so scary. What really irks me is that they have yet to release what, exactly, is in these foods that is making animals sick. We lost our beloved Corgi five years ago to Renal failure at the young age of four. She could only tolerate eating the soft Iams dog food. Perhaps this recent recall may explain it. Fortunately, we now only feed our dogs and cats the Purina kibbles, but this is so frightening for anyone who feeds their precious pets wet food. And as with any recall, we never know when or if they will extend the recall to the hard kibbles as well.

And here’s a question that’s been on my mind lately - why in the hell do they put artificial colors in dog food? Do the dogs really find bright red, bone-shaped kibbles more appealing, considering the fact that their ability to see the color spectrum is severely limited and I doubt they care what shape their food is? When my Whippet started having trouble with vomiting and chewing on her skin until it would bleed, I asked the vet what it could be. She said it was most likely an allergic reaction to the harsh coloring in the “Kibbles & Bits” I was feeding her. I switched her to an organic dog food and she never had another problem. :-x

The dogs don’t care what colour the food is, but they don’t buy their own food. Humans do. That’s why marketing is aimed at the human, despite the ultimate ‘consumers’ being animals.

My dogs had a different reaction to food with any colorants - but it’s more along the lines of chemical warfare. They can clear out a room like nothing else! Once during a move, my dad gave the dogs Ol’ Roy food (Walmart brand). That stopped after I put the dogs in with him for a night. pinches nose

I’m so glad that my little brother is a bit of a lazy bum for once. He doesn’t feed the cats anything with gravy in it because it’s a pain for him to get out of the can. The flavors they do eat aren’t on the list.

I hope anyone who’s pet ate some doesn’t get sick, or survives if it is sick.

Thanks very much for that list! They haven’t talked about this at all on the news here (at least not that I’ve seen, and I’m a regular news watcher and newspaper reader)…and we can get some of those brands in Germany.

Amazing. I’ve thrown away Iams (which I only started buying because I thought it was more HEALTHY) and am still feeding my two babies (cats) Fancy Feast which they’ve always eaten.
I keep waiting for it to pop up on a new list. aieeeeeeee

I also have this new stuff in the cupboard, Meow Mix. It looks great and they love it but now I’m afraid to give it to them. (it’s wet) Funny thing about a scare like this, I looked at where Meow Mix is made for the first time yesterday. Thailand. Ha. Can’t believe I never noticed that before.

I have always supplemented my cat’s food with fresh chicken livers which are just so cheap and they love them both raw and cooked. And I also give them a treat of shrimp once in a while, a big bag like $6.00 last a week. And they love SQUID! Extremely cheap. Now I’m giving them more and more human food.

Footnote: investigate the type of shrimp you are eating. some of it is coming from countries who are doing farm raised shrimp with nasty stuff in there… (I read an article on this recently and will try and remember where if anyone is interested)

You actually really need to do research before giving your cat different food. With this scare a lot more people are resorting to homemade food, but even just switching from commercial to homemade can do a number on their insides. I would suggest talking to a veterinarian before drastically changing the animals’ sole diets. I know they love meat, but that’s really going from one extreme to another. Meat once in a while is surely not going to harm them (provided that it’s not bad), but changing to almost just strictly meat from a diet of commercialized food is a big jump.

I think there’s nothing wrong with IAMS (maybe I’m ill informed?). The only thing that I don’t like about commercialized food is the amount of vegetables and grain filler that they put in them to entice humans to buy it and to keep their products cheaper. Dogs and Cats do not need that many grains (aside from the ocassional grass nibble).

We suspect that our cat died as a result of tainted cat food. Please, check and re-check your pet food.

Our kitty was missing for a week, before we found her. I can only imagine how she suffered :frowning:
