OT: This Funny World We Live In

Welllll. I just got home from a job interview with a knitting store.

Ha ha ha. Quite an experience. I want a job so bad coz I haven’t had one for awhile and I’m a bit lonely not to mention broke! So I’ve been going round to yarn shops…

and got called in on an interview today. I brought a great big heavy bag of stuff to show. I waited just about 1 1/2 hours past the time my appointment was for I figured, it’s ok, they’re busy, get to know the shop… knit a bit.

Finally I was interviewed. I mentioned that I was online everyday with a wonderful knitting forum, the best! And just to try to get the job, I also said I sometimes give advice when people ask for help with their knitting.

BA BOOM!

This was a problem. I was informed if I got a job in this shop I could no longer, ever ever, answer anyone’s questions about knitting, not online or in person, because they have a reputation to maintain and there could be PROBLEMS down the line if I say something they don’t agree with. In fact they had had problems already.

It’s KNITTING! KNITTING! KNITTING. not secret government policies!

They didn’t want to look at my stuff at all. They said they might ‘try’ me out for a day to watch me, but the owner has to be consulted because I am on a knitting forum. Can you believe this??

I've decided I don't want to work there not at all.

Thank god I had the pleasant experience on the bus coming home of THREE women wanting to see my work, and oohhhhing and ahhhhing
over my creations & colors & ideas. THAT was REALLY NICE.

             What a day.

RUN do not walk from this job. The owner sounds PARANOID! Besides you wouldn’t want to work anywhere where they might exclude US? Do you? DO YOU?

:?? What ever happened to “Go ask at your LYS if you need help?” Are they afraid they’ll be sued if they answer a question wrong? What reputation could they have if they don’t give advice? Oh. It’s in Manhattan. I get it.

That is RIDICULOUS!

okay i don’t think i would even want to shop there after that!..and to think all the business that they could potentially get from all the people you talk to here!

i wonder if the owner really is like that! have you shopped at that store before?

What the heck kind of bizarro store is this???
Is knitting top secret now?
Or do they have expensive malpractice insurance against incorrect knitting advice or what?
I don’t get it.
Don’t work there!

That is freaky beyond expression. If you told me that yarn store was located near me, I’d be boycotting it right now, and encouraging my companions to do the same.

wow - that sounds like quite an interview for selling yarn. LOL

seems like they’re a little up-tight and you’re better off.

That is the freakiest thing I’ve ever heard! What is WRONG with those people?

“We do not encourage the use of the m1 increase; you should have told the customer to kfb, which we find much more suitable. We’ll be docking you a day’s wages so that you will learn your place, plebian.”

Since Kelly’s sick, I’ll say it for her:

FER CRYIN’ OUT LOUD!

Oh brother.

They need to get a life, and find something real to worry about.

You are better off without them. If they feel that way about something so harmless imagine what other “rules” they will have. tsk, tsk, tsk.

Candace

 That is ridiculous! The nerve of that store! You are way better off without them!

That’s strange. It’s sad that people have to be so insecure about things to trivial. Que sera, sera. Glad to hear that you’ve decided not to work for people who feel so negatively about something so beautiful.

Beyond weird! My favorite LYS sometimes has a wonderful woman just sittin’ an’ knittin’ to give advice to anyone who needs it. I’ve asked a few questions - sometimes she knows, sometimes she doesn’t - sometimes she’s right, and sometimes (very rarely!) she’s wrong - but it’s nice to be able to get input no matter what. That store is way off track!!!

Yikes, that is beyond strange…keep looking!

What is the name of that store??!!?? I live in NJ not too far from NYC and might happen upon it unless I know to AVOID it like the plague!!!

“We do not encourage the use of the m1 increase; you should have told the customer to kfb, which we find much more suitable. We’ll be docking you a day’s wages so that you will learn your place, plebian.”

THAT IS SO FUNNY! That's just what I felt like while I was in there.... a low low lowly plebian. I took out my beautiful beaded shrug with the fancy frilled cuffs I designed, everyone thinks is fabulous and this person just stared at it like it was a dead fish. Said nothing.

Well I’m reading this first thing upon getting up and THANK YOU ALL for your funny and smart words! I was in a bit of a huff when I got home yesterday and … yuk… I feel much better now.

I might have worded it wrong, I suppose IN the shop I could give some advice as long as it was in their way of thinking, it was OUTSIDE the shop I would not be allowed to give tips or advice but ESP on A KNITTING FORUM!

Something about knitting forum struck terror in this fellow’s heart… oh and also I couldn’t sell anything I made if I said I worked for them.
Oh FORGEDDABOUDIT! Let’s not start the day with the same junk…

but I’m not going to put the name coz I really don’t want to be uh,
what’s the word, not evil, whatever! That would be just ugly and I don’t want to have that here! Anyhoo… (NJknitter if you really want to avoid the place I’ll email you!)

Oh and this :…and to think all the business that they could potentially get from all the people you talk to here!

That’s exactly what I thought! In fact another yarn shop that doesn’t need anyone right now was really interested in “US” and had me write down the name… now she was a smart owner.

Oh Ingrid! There are some fine shops in Manhattan, well, a few with horrible attitude, but then a few that got it right. Although, reminds me of a phone conversation I had once while looking for yarn: I called a shop I thought was in NYC and asked if they had a particular one and the woman was looking and chatting and laughing and then she said she had it so I asked her address and she was up in Syracuse. I said “Ah, no WONDER you’re so nice!” She really laughed at that.

There are other shops for me! I’m going to another one to check out today. cheers,

It just occurred to me why they might fear forums. Look at all the beautiful yarn on line! Look at the gorgeous pictures we post of yarn that arrived in the mail. How many of us are secretly in love with our UPS man? The internet is a threat to yarn shops, but with attitudes like they have, they’re not helping the situation any!

I’m hearing that song by Garbage “I think I’m PAranoid” :happydance:

Yes, that’s so true Ingrid! I get so much yarn as we all do (esp you!) by mail that is easy and often more affordable. When a yarn store person is lovely though, I often buy a skein or 3 just coz I like them and their store.
Ah well, it’s their loss!

pa pa pa paranoid I want to hear that song!

The owner of the only LYS within 100 miles here was like that. One of her empoyees picked up her yarn to show me how to put the needle in one stitch and she about came unglued. Needless to say, the shop just went out of business! I had never seen a more unfriendly person. She should never have been running any shop let alone a yarn one. I only went there because it was the only place I could get my dpns. Every thing else was too expensive. I couln’t afford to buy a single skein there. This summer I think that in the spring the neighbor and I are going to take a day trip to Washington and see if we can find some shops there. I have heard rumors that there are several. :happydance: But the weather has been too bad here to go now.
