OT - Anyone been to or live in Destin, FL?

Has anyone here ever been to or live in Destin, FL? I have been invited to go the first week of May. How is the weather that time of year, what is the beach like, etc?? I’ve never been to FL and was just wondering what it is like. TIA!

Just moved from FL. Its hot. All of the time. Varying degrees of hot, but hot nonetheless.

In May it will be nice and hot. Summer time for sure. I would guess mid 80’s for the high.

Sorry that I missed your note yesterday but… let’s see if this helps in your decision making process:

Destin is on the Florida panhandle and the Gulf of Mexico. You see both the sunrise and sunset on this beach which is pretty cool. The beaches themselves are white sand and the water is blue and green - depending on depth! For the most part, the water is very calm! (They do have the flag warning system when there are storms out at sea - blue= calm seas, yellow = use caution, red= strong undertow) When there are hurricanes out in the gulf, you can get serious seaweed wash-up but May is early for that. If you’ve been to the Atlantic, think low tide conditions in Destin most of the time - no big crashing waves. No jellyfish either, which is good for me! We are in Georgia and Panama City Beach (just East of Destin) was always our Spring Break destination - Spring Break is in April. It was HOT and we always got tans/sunburns.

Other helpful info: they sell beer on Sunday in Florida (not in Ga), they have good beer prices, most beaches do not have lifeguards but there are occasional patrols by local law enforcement on 4-wheelers, there are TONS of seafood resteraunts, there was a pretty good outlet mall in case of rainy weather, there are some “hoity-toity” shops that sell fabulous shoes, there are lots of people! If you are looking for a “quiet beach to get away to”… Destin is probably not going to be it. If you’re in college and looking for a fun place with pretty beaches and water… this was where we always went!

It has been some time since I last went and I know that there has been tons of development down there - property prices went through the roof! When I was in my teens and 20’s - we always had a blast down there. Oh, one little warning - it is VERY humid down there! In June and July you can be talking 97 degrees with 98% humidity - people unsued to the humidity claim that they cannot breathe but then settle down and get used to it. My tip? Drink plenty of water and drink bottled water - the Fla. water tastes funny to me.

Hope this helps somewhat, Angela

Well, today is March 21 and though I’m further south than Destin, it will be 88 degrees today. When I got up this morning it was already 74 and quite humid, though not like it will be very soon.
The first week of May will be hot and humid, but not quite rainy season. The air might not yet be quite to the point at which you swear each breath you take is being filtered through a hot, wet, wool blanket. :roflhard: :roflhard:

:?? Well, no Yvonne, that’s not 'til Memorial Day! And the good news, it only lasts until October! :roflhard:

I went to Destin last June and while it was hot, there was a very nice breeze on the beach.

My parents and I went on a “see the dolphins” boat ride. It was a lot of fun. I guess we were gone a little over an hour. We went up to Ft. Walton to see the dolphins and then on the way back, we went along the shoreline of Destin. It was very nice. I don’t remember the exact name of the company…I remember it took off from the marina on the main drag of Destin (as your driving towards Ft. Walton). If I come across the name, I’ll post it here for you.

You’ll find some very pretty shells in Destin. Due to the fact that the sea is much calmer on the gulf, the shells don’t get beaten up as much as they do on the Atlantic coast. I got up early every morning to go shelling. I had so much fun.

Have a great time!

Thanks for all the advice! Sounds like a great place…I especially like the fact that there are no jellyfish! :happydance:
