I’ve knitted a round neck cardigan 20 inch.
I was wondering if I could separately knit the button bands and sew them on.
Opinion please
What pattern are you using and who is the designer?
Yes, there are many patterns that call for separate button and buttonhole bands. You can seam the bands to the front edges very nicely. What does the currect pattern require?
The pattern is james c brett jb515
The pattern says pick up and knit the button bands.
I just wanted if I could knit them seperate and sew them on.
Yes, you can. Typically the separate buttonband are knit bottom up (rather than from the edge out) then seamed to the front.
Do you not like picking up sts? It usually works so nicely (in general picking up 3sts for every 4 rows in stockinette stitch). This is a darling little cardigan.
Suppose I should give it go.im not a fan of picking up stitches.
Lots of knitters feel that way but I’m honestly amazed at how well it works. Either way, the buttonbands will work out just fine. Let us know how it’s going.
It’s knitter’s choice really. Some prefer one way, some the other. If I might ask, what don’t you like about picking up stitches?
To be honest, sometimes I find it hard getting the right amount of stitches and I always worry does it look right .
I will do and thanks.
I just pick up 3 for every 4 rows. For k1,p1 rib I like to start and end with a knit stitch so as long as I have an odd number of sts picked up, that works. I have to say that I almost, just about never get the given stitch number from the pattern.
Is the problem with tension of the picked up stitches? My biggest problem with pick up and knit was the tension of the picked up stitches. They were always too loose, and not just a little. I tighten them up after knitting the first row starting at the end that doesn’t have a tail and usually end up with a very long tail. I just pull gently on each leg of the stitch or the purl bump on the other side of the work, whichever is working better for me at the moment. I also use a much smaller needle when I can but still need to adjust the tension.
Stitch count can be adjusted on the next row. Slip stitch edges aren’t always the best for picking up stitches since you can only pick up one for every two rows.
I’m not trying to convert you to pu&k rather than seaming. It is knitter’s choice. I do think figuring out what the problem is and resolving it is good and helps with future projects. Sometimes pu&k is a really good tool to use well.
I think a vertical buttonband would co-ordinate nicely with the 1x1 ribbing already in the design.
I wish I could be of help but I’m not sure, I honestly haven’t tried it before! Good luck and hope you get it figured out
