One more sock question from a beginner

Okay, this may be a tad bit long, but if anyone can help me I’ll be able to continue with my first sock. If not, well, unraveling awaits.

I’ve done the ribbing and just finished the leg, at the end of my instructions for the leg it is says to Turn work. I still don’t get what that means. There are 48 stitches and I put 24 on one needle and left the other 2 needles with 12 stitches on them.

The next step says: Row 1: Slip 1 purlwise wyif, purl to end of row. Turn over to right side.

My question here: I thought I was working on the right side. ???

Then for Row 2: *Slip 1 purlwise wyib, K1; repeat from * to end of row.

Okay, for row 1 I’m pretty sure I did that right, except for the right side/wrong side confusion. But the row 2 part, I just don’t get. I had the yarn in the back and put my needle as if I was going to purl (the slip 1 purlwise) then I moved the yif and knitted the next stitch.

When I did the above the bumps on the ‘right side’, to me, looked like they should have been on the inside of the sock.

Am I doing this completely wrong? The answer is obviously yes, but can anyone help me with this?

Usually when you start the heel flap, the first row is a right side row. I wonder if this is a mistake in the pattern? Don’t be so quick to think that you’re the one making a mistake!

Have a look at my sock tutorial here. The heel flap is begun on the second page (see step 5), see if that helps clear some things up for you. And most of all, don’t stress too much. You can alter a sock pattern a lot and still end up with a great sock.

I guess I just assume that the directions are correct and I’m the one doing everything wrong!! Never thought that the books could be wrong! Thanks for the help, but I looked at that page last night and it really doesn’t help me since the directions are different. I’m really stuck on the Row 2 instructions. And then some. :wall:

Your first row should be on the right side. If they started it on the wrong side, then you also need to start on the wrong side. Knit across the row, then start as they say.

For row 2, you’ll keep the yarn in back for the whole row. Slip one purlwise, then knit one. Repeat across. Slip, knit, slip, knit, all with the yarn in back.

It is the same heel flap as in my tutorial, they just have the rows reversed.

Thanks, Silver, I’ll give it a try. Also, thank you for clarifying the row 2 problem, I’m near tears here!! I’m a very high strung person, I heard that knitting relaxes you. I’m still waiting for that to happen!!

I think I bought the same book…the pattern is identical and I’m glad I searched, my question was the SAME. <sigh> Any book that claims to be for a person doing their first sock, “and you’ll get it right easily the first time” etc. etc. should really CHECK this kind of thing!! :frowning:

I made a sock from Sensational Knitted Socks that begins the heel flap with a WS row. I don’t like it as well as Silver’s socks though.
