One more afghan square pattern request

Hi everyone

I think I’m ready to learn how to knit a cable (at least I hope I’m ready!) and I have watched the video on this helpful site.

Now I’d like to find the pattern for an afghan square with clear instructions for a square with two or three cables in it. The blocks I’m doing are 52 stitches wide.

I looked at some of the really great links to pages of dishcloth patterns, but didnt find anything that seemed simple enough for a sample of my first attempt at cables.

If you have a pattern that might work for this project, I would be SO happy if you would share it.

Thanks, and happy knitting!

I couldn’t find anything that specifically for a set of 52 stiches, but you might be able to easily modify this pattern here. It calls for 24 stiches, so you could double the pattern and add an extra 2 knit stiches at the beginning and end. Not sure if that helps because you have to modify it!

You can also work with the Irish Hiking Scarf pattern. I haven’t made this yet (it is on my list) but from what I understand it is a good first project. To make it 52 stiches you can just add on 5 knit stiches on both sides.

If these don’t work you may want to see if you can find a book of stiches at your library like this one it might have some basic cable patterns that you could use.

I hope this helps!
Good Luck -
Sara

Hello Sara

WOW! Your message and the links really help! I have to admit I didn’t know there were books of knitting stitches, so now I know where to go for them.

The Irish Hiking Scarf looks like the right thing for my project. Thanks again.

Glad to be of help! Be sure to post pictures of your afghan when you are done - I’m sure it will look great!

I bought a book from Barnes & Noble of stiches and couldn’t believe how much was in there! I use them to create different patterns for cat snuggles for local animal shelters - and it is a great way to learn new techniques without having to commit to a whole project.
