Oh these darn socks!

So today I went back to the yarn store and took my time looking around. The types of yarn confused the heck out of me! I ended up picking up Vintage worsted yarn (no idea what that even means) I also picked up a cable needle, and a book called “I can’t believe I’m knitting socks” I flipped through the book at the store and it looks VERY basic. They talk you through every step.

When I went to pay, the lady asked me if I was knitting socks. I told her about my numerous attempts, about all the youtube videos I have tried, and about the assistance you have all tried to give me. She told me to come in with them. I laughed and told her that I’ve asked for help there 3 times already. She told me not to worry and that I should keep coming in until I get it. Made me feel a little better, especially since others in line were discussing their first socks. I’ll let ya know if the book is helpful!

ok so I have picked up my yarn and dpn’s again to attempt the socks, but before I begin I want to make sure I have these needles numbered correctly

can someone please number these needles for me from this photo

Which is considered needle 1 which is considered 2 and which is considered 3?

The way I understand it is the needle on the left is needle 1, then the needle on the bottom is needle 2, and the needle on the right (with the string attatched) is needle 3? Then your working needle at the start of a round becomes your new needle 1, is this correct? Thanks

Yes, you’ve got the correct numbering. When you finish the heel, the pattern may tell you how to number the needles but it’s usually similar to your picture.

so glad I finally got it right, I’m pretty sure it does change though, because when I start the heel, needle 2 I think then becomes 1, although it doesnt say that in my pattern

Ok I believe I have run into a little problem now

I just finished this part

“With right side of work facing, pick up and knit 9 sts along left side of heel. With 2nd needle knit across 16 sts from instep. With 3rd needle pick up and knit 9 sts along right side of heel. Knit first 5 sts from heel onto beg of first needle. 44 sts and now divided 14 sts on first needle. 16 sts on 2nd needle and 14 sts on 3rd needle”

and began on
"Cont working in rounds as follows:

1st round:
1st needle: knit to last 3 sts. K2tog, K1.
2nd needle: Knit.
3rd needle: K1, Sl1. K1. psso Knit to end of needle

2nd round: Knit.
Rep last 2 rounds to 32 sts divided as 8 sts on first needle, 16 sts on 2nd needle and 8 sts on 3rd needle.

Cont even until foot from picked up sts at heel measures 6 1/2 ins.
"

I did the first and second round but I believe I am facing the wrong way…is there a way to fix this?

What I mean is the long part of the sock is facing the bottom and not facing me. So I am looking INTO the tube part.

here is what I mean, (the black yarn is the beginning of my round

The knit side should be facing out and the purl side should be on the inside of the tube. You should be working knit sts with the outside of the tube always facing you, not working purl sts on the inside of the sock. Don’t take all the needles out to fix this, just unknit it one st at a time until you’ve taken out the last two rows.
I’m not sure from the picture where your marker is (in the middle of the bottom needle or at the apex of the triangle on the left needle?) in the picture. I just use the break between needles 3 and 1 as the beginning of round or put a safety pin in the knitting below the break between needles 3 and 1. It’s midway between the heel sts (5 heel sts on needle 3, 5 on needle 1). If you look on the Free Videos tab at the top of the page under Tips, Fixing Mistakes there’s a demo of re-doing a row one st at a time.

I finished! Photo posted in Whatcha Knitting…
Thank you all SO much. xoxoxoxo
