Off My Lap

Anyone have any tips for holding a big/heavy project off your lap while knitting?

I’m dealing with same issue. Working on a throw. At this point I have it in a cloth bag with completed part in bag and the working area at top. I can sit bag next to me and turn bag as work the row. Still cumbersome but it’s a little more contained. Looking forward to any other suggestions that might be easier.

Haven’t tried this but I’m wondering if one of those plastic TV dinner kind of tables might work?

Never done this myself but perhaps an ironing board in front of you as they can be adjusted to a suitable height?

Shintoga and Creations! Genius!! I actually have a table -top adjustable ironing board so I’m going to try combining both these suggestions:)

I usually either use big rubber bands to hold the throw/afghan together so it’s not so bulky or tie it up with yarn. That way you can put most of the yarn to your side and still be comfortable knitting.

I fold my blanket neatly and place it next to me on the couch. Hold the blanket up in the air with the knitting needle at the top. Then fold the blanket in half vertically. Fold it twice (in quarters) if it’s very large. Now you have a long, narrow blanket. Fold the bottom portion in an accordian fashion into a manageable size (~ 18" x 18" or so). Place the folded part next to you, or on a table or tray. You can leave the bottom folded like this until you are done, to keep it neat AND clean. You don’t have to unfold it to turn your work. Just knit 2 rows and then flip the folded part over. Everything will magically untwist and be nice and neat!
