I tried to crochet a ‘holey’ casual vest…
I haven’t crocheted in quite a while and I think I’ve forgotten something and I can’t seem to find anything that pertains to this problem.
I’ve begun on the back of the piece and was going fine until I noticed that one side of the piece has a slope happening. The other side is straight and I can’t figure it out.
Here’s what I’m doing:
I did a foundation of 90 stitches and then did sc as the first row.
The second row is made up of double crochet sts every second stitch leaving me a nice little hole after each double crochet.
The pattern is quite simple and I’m using a nice soft yarn to make it with but this is the 4th time I’ve taken the whole thing out and started over and the slope happens every time.
I thought it must just be my imagination because most of the time, when I just pull on the piece it seems to straighten out but I think that’s probably not really happening.
I’ve made up the pattern myself when I was stymied at being able to knit a holey pattern… the old brain just understand simple straight-forward stuff…
Please help!
Thanks,
Ethel :??
From your description this vest popped into my head. A slope at the side makes me think that you’re missing the last stitch, the turning chain from the row below sometimes. Have you counted your stitches to see if you’re losing any?
Or are you making too short a turning chain on one end?
To tell the truth, I have no idea what I was doing but it’s since been fixed. I figured out that I must be omitting the last st at the end of the line so I pulled the whole thing out and started again with great success! Hooray!
Thank you so much for coming in and helping out…
How about a second problem?
Now I’m trying to figure out how to decrease at the arm edges while using double crochet… stumped!
That’s me… always in trouble…
Hugs to you both!

I’m so glad you got it going well. I figured salmonmac was spot on. Doesn’t matter who guessed correctly, it’s going OK for you. Do you mean you don’t know how to do the decreases themselves? I’m linking to a search for some by a person I always liked going to for help. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=bethintx1+decrease
Hi Grumpy Gramma… I had a look at the videos you recommended and love them… Thank you so much for putting me onto them.
