Oblique Shawl

I purchased this pattern which was originally in Aslan Trends Season’s Change Volume 1. I don’t have the book, just the pattern. Anyway, if anyone has knitted it and can help. I am at Row 7, where it says: K1, P1 across and repeat this row until 8" from beginning. THEN, it says:
Divide for opening as follows: Separate and hold 30 knit sts from the 30 purl stitches. Now how can you separate by knit and purl stitches when a K1, P1 as described above is basically a rib Pattern.
If anyone could help, I would appreciate it. I am wondering is something was left out of this copy.

Thanks,
Barb

Sounds like an interesting pattern. What do you do next?

I would say that you would do exactly as you stated - separate the knits from the purls. You could do this by using two needles - put the knits on one needle and the purls on the other. You probably work on one section at a time so you would put the section you’re not working on a stitch holder or scrap yarn.

Would love to hear what the next step is though!! I bet if you read ahead in the pattern it will make more sense.

I think I get it now. I started ripping out what I had done so far and found out that you can, in fact, separate the knits from purls onto separate needles which didn’t occur to me until I saw how it looked when I was ripping it. This is the left “end” of the scarf and when it is completed, you will slip the right “end” into the left end. The part I am working on is apparently going to be a little ‘opening’ to slip the right end into after completing the shawl. The pattern says to join these two separated sections after 3", thereby creating the little opening to slip the other end into.

You can find a picture of the shawl at this web page. Let me know what you think.

Barb, thanks for the link - I think it looks like a great project and I’m so glad that you figured it out. I hope you’ll post a picture of your finished shawl!!!

Thanks for the help, Susan. I don’t know how to put a picture into this quick reply. Do I have to go back to the beginning of the thread to do this? I will definitely send you a picture when done. I am making it out of a Borroco yarn in a heather lilac color. It will be gorgeous I think. I just finished knitting “Braided Glory” and it came out wonderfully. In fact, I am wearing it right now as it is a little chilly in the house. If you haven’t seen it, go to Ocknitiot. It is a shawl that is braided in the front so you can put it on like a poncho. Everywhere I go, I get comments on it! You can get the Braided Glory pattern on Ravelry as an immediately download after paying. It’s great. Thanks again.

Here’s the actual blog where you can see Braided Glory.

Thank you for that link - I love that shawl!!! I’ve been really into ponchos lately - made one and have one on the needles - and several patterns waiting to be started. I’ve never made a shawl, but that one is very much like a poncho since it’s one piece. I may have to get that pattern too!!!

I’m so glad that you shared that link!!!

Great! I’m glad I was able to share something fun. I love the fact you can get it as an immediate download too. You know how it is with us knitters. When we want something, we want it NOW. If you get it and have any problems, let me know and I will help you. It’s not hard to do though. To make the “braids”, you knit 5 “fingers” on each side, then weave or braid them and then finish the tie ends, so the “fingers” stay braided. Lots of fun. Thanks again. Barb
