How do you start double knitting? I casted on but now what do I do? I see some websites say to sl 1 is that what I do? I’m soo confuzzled!!! :wall::thud:
Try looking at Amy’s video for double-knitting here and see if it helps: http://www.knittinghelp.com/apps/flash/video_player/play/6/1.
Basically, attach your second color and then move both colors back and forth, knitting one stitch and purling the next. The knit stitches will appear on the side of the fabric near you; the purl stitches on the other side (as knit on that side). Try if for a while with a swatch, and you’ll see what happens with the colors. It doesn’t show up right away when you knit a row (it just looks a mess) because the needle holds the stitches sequentially instead of letting them move to the front and back like they want to.
Good luck – it’s fun to watch it work out and to get how the colors interact.

The mechanism of double knitting is basically that you’re doing both sides at once; instead of having a right side and a wrong side to your work, you have a right side and another right side, with the stitches on the needle alternating between the two (i.e. 1, 3, 5, 7 make up one side; 2, 4, 6, 8 make up the other). …okay, so technically you’re going to end up with two pieces of fabric (sometimes interlocked at color changes), each of which has an outer-facing right side and inner-facing wrong side. But.
There are two ways I’ve seen to do double knitting. One is to do k1 sl1 across the entire row (knitting one side and slipping the other) and then k1 sl1 again (knitting the stitches you’d slipped before and slipping the ones you just knitted). The other way, which is demonstrated in Amy’s video, is to do k1 p1 across the entire row, and then k1 p1 again.
…or, y’know, different patterns if you want something other than plain stockinette.
So after you’ve cast on, you just start going, knitting every other stitch (and either slipping or purling the other one). After a few rows they’ll divide out into something that actually looks right!
It takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s fun. I did the dk hotpad pattern here (link!) as my first jaunt into double-knitting, and aside from having to frog it and re-do because I was making too many mistakes, it actually came out looking decent.
And I got way more used to double knitting…
I love double knitting! back in April /May i did a multi part tutorial on double knitting… there are 2 basic styles(as above)
(and there are other styles of knitting that are also called double knitting!)
you can cast on color A and in row 1 or row X cast add yarn B…
or you can do a 2 color/yarn cast on. and start double knitting right away (one page has a YouTube link to a demo of 2 color casting on)
start here, (april 28) and then check out may archives (early part of month)
I’ve made double knit hats, and even a double knit vest, but i love to knit double knit potholders… (and swatch patterns!)
it took me forever but now i know thanks anyway
