Not understanding a section from two different patterns which has stopped the slow progress

Hi All lovely KnittingHelp people:upside_down_face:

I’m doing two patterns - did one, hit a snag so tried a different project and nearly immediately hit another snag so please, if someone who is far better at this knitting malarkey than me could throw some light on the following I would be most grateful:

Pattern 1 - Ted Bear (Free Pattern - Jem Weston) - merrily knitting along thinking how awesome I am, loving the way the face is coming out with the line, perfect yarn (bought on sale for less than 50c) and BOOM - near the end the following is on the pattern - “Front of legs & feet, Next row K11, place rem 11 sts on holder. *Beg with P row, work 14 rows in st st. Place marker in first & last st of last row. Beg with P row, work 11 rows in st st. Break off yarn.” (all excellent to this point…) Then the pattern says " With right side facing, pick up and knit 11 sts along right hand side of work from marker to needle, Knit 11 sts from needle, then pick up and knit 11 sts from left hand side of work to marker. 33 sts." Huh??? I have no idea if this is start at the 11 stitiches that I put on the holder or start to pick up stitches at the marked row (if this is so, how???) or do I carry on with the 11 sts on my needle? So confused. The pattern then goes on to say “Beg with P row…” but as I don’t understand the previous part I have no idea further.

Incidentally, on the first page of the pattern, from Front of Head, the row that starts “K1, M1, K2, M1, K8, M1, K2, M1, K1 18 sts” until “Beg with P row, work 3 rows in st st” the stitch counts are out if I do them. So the first row 18 sts = 20 sts, 22 sts = 25 sts, 26 sts = 30 sts and 30 sts = 34 sts.

Please help with this pattern.

The second pattern is Free Pattern Friday : Knit Shawl Pattern from Yarnspirations:

Pretty much from the first “Turn” under the Instructions, the wording is unclear and the stitches don’t add up. I left the spare stitches on a needle and did the “Rep last 2 rows 8 times more” part BUT the last two rows were actually “Turn.” and “Leave rem sts on a spare needle” so I assumed that the pattern was referring to Next row: Sl1. PM on last worked st. Knit to last st. Kfb. and Next row: Kfb. Knit to 3 sts before marked st." so need clarity on that. If these are indeed the rows we need to follow, there are not enough stitches to do this 8 more times.

So I stopped there as my spare needle was getting full and difficult to manouvere whilst holding the circular needles (which seem to be too big for the look I want) and then I’ve run out of stitches so am sitting with 5 times more not 8 times more.

Sorry this post is soooooo long but here I thought I’d just have a quiet Sunday evening finishing my Ted Bear and looking at cracking on on the crochet Christmas baubles I’m also doing (but I prefer the knitting parts of my weekend) and now I’m feeling down and not able to finish either project and so am frantically looking for an easy to understand shawl type pattern that isn’t going to take too many turns to complete.

Phew! So that’s it.

Looking forward with baited breath for some KnittingHelp insight from this fantastic community.

Rock on Knitting:)

This happens to all of us at one time or another. Knitting is going well and then suddenly you hit a roadblock. You’re doing projects that stretch your abilities and you’re learning new techniques. Good going, you.
For the first pattern, start the 11 sts at the marker on the right hand side of the work. Pick up 11, knit across the 11 active sts on the needle and then pick up 11 more down the left hand side. Here’s a video for picking up sts.

What kind of increase are you working? It should be a Make 1 where you pick up the bar between sts. That way the quoted row works out to 18sts. See the increase at the 2:35 minute point in this video:

I’ll look at the shawl in a bit:

Oh thank you so much for your quick response! I was so hoping to complete the Ted Bear this evening and now I get it so will be adding the stitches on the right side and then when turning purling the entire lot of 33 as the pattern advises.

I did do my yarn increase stitches completely differently but it doesn’t seem to have made a difference to the piece as I wangled it and there are the correct amount of stitches and so I will not pull these out, but if the above stitches work out, I plan on making another Ted Bear for a charity so will follow the pattern to a “t”.

I look forward to your take on the shawl.

Again, thank you for taking the time out to help me. You are much appreciated.

The notes on this project may help:

I tried out the original pattern and it worked if I knit to 3sts before the gap.
