Not sure how to start this pattern - Peppy Lid

Hiya,

Thanks for reading my post - I’m hoping for some help.

I would like to make this, but I haven’t got a clue what they mean :aww:

Here is the free pattern I got from my local yarn store: http://ramwools.com/pdf/peppy-lid.pdf

What do they mean here?
With scrap yarn and two 4.5mm (US 7)
needles, cast on 16 sts that will be undone after the
band is complete. Slipping the first stitch of every row,
Knit 2 rows, Purl 2 rows 36 times.

Hmm, I thought of a few possibilites. . . but I’m not a very good knitter.

I know what slipping is, I can cast on, knit and purl. . . but what do they mean by scrap yarn? Yarn that is just hanging around? If yes, how and when do I encorporate the yarn intended for the project?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks!

Now that I think of it, maybe I should have put this in the ‘pattern’ area… Oops!

Yep, it’s just some leftover yarn. You cast on with it and later take it out; that’s what’s known as a provisional cast on. Just cast on with it, then drop that yarn and with the yarn you’re going to use for the hat, knit 2 rows etc. Just leave a tail that you can weave in later on; it looks loose for a row or two, but the stitches won’t come out. Then after you’ve done the purl and knit rows, take out the other yarn from the cast on and put the sts on a needle. Use one a little smaller than you’re knitting the hat with and put it into the sts as you take out the cast on. Then you graft the ends together. This is usually Kitchener stitch, but you can do a three needle bind off. There’s videos for both of them here.
