I’m a beginner knitter and I’m trying to make the knitted peace sign [that’s on this site]. But unfortunately the pattern doesn’t come with any directions. It just comes with the pattern. It’s easy enough to follow until i get to the 4th row where I purl about 12 stitches and I’m prompted to k2tog. (I know how to do that) but I’m not sure whether I should continue to k2tog or whether I should purl or what. I’m just confused and for a “beginner/intermediate” pattern, I didn’t think that this was too clear. I really want this peace sign and I would really appreciate it if someone could help me!
Hi, I went and looked at the pattern you are talking about and I don’t think there is enough information there to work this pattern. You said on row 4 that you were prompted to K2tog. Row 4, in the middle gives a M \l/ M (except that the three lines come together at the bottom in the chart. They don’t give you any explanation of that symbol with the pattern. I don’t believe it is a K2tog at all. There is a lot on that chart that I don’t think the little list of explanations covers.
If someone had one of Barbara Walker’s stitch books they could see what all the symbols stand for. For me it would be guess work without more information. The peace sign is a sort of cable pattern, but I’m not a beginner and I don’t think I could figure it out with what is given.
I wish I could help you but I don’t think I can. Sorry.
I think I got it (at least some of it). It took a while, going back and forth from the chart and the key to the cart.
At first I couldn’t figure out what the \1/ symbol could mean, either. But it is a V with a ‘1’ in the middle. If you look at the key, the 2nd symbol is a V increase how ever many times the number in the middle is. Right above it on row 5 is a V with a 0 in it, and up near the top of the peace sign is an upside down V with a 5 in it (this must be a decrease). Did you realize the 'x’s in the first 1-3 rows are not stitches, they don’t exist yet in those rows. On row 4 you’ll be doing several increases. There’s 2 Make 1 increases on either side of the center stitch, it doesn’t really say how to do the other increase.
