Not quite sure how to do this

I am attempting a new afghan and am fairly new at knitting. My pattern reads as follows:

Row 1: P1, * yb (yarn back), sl 3 as to purl, yf(yarn front), P1, repeat from * to end.

Row 2: Knit.

Row 3: Purl.

Row 4 K2, * Knit bar from Row 1 and next st on left-hand needle together, K3, repeat from * to last 2 sts, and K2.

My question is will the “Bar” from row one be easy to find? I understand the entire pattern just a little unsure of row 4. Or should I not think so much ahead and just do it?! Thanks for your help ahead of time.

When I am faced with questions like this, I knit up a sample to see how it’s going to work. Most of the time, however, it’s very good advice to just trust the pattern. Yes, sometimes the pattern is incorrect, but the majority of the time it’s correct.

In time you’ll be able to picture what the stitch pattern will look like as you read the knitting instructions–that just comes with time and familiarity with knitting and what it produces.

Yes, the “bar” from row 1 is… the yarn you carried behind your work while you slipped the 3 stitches as if to purl. See, by slipping and not knitting/purling those 3 stitches, you made a “bar” out of the unused yarn that you carried from the last stitch you actually purled across the 3 that did not need the yarn to the 4th stitch that got purled.

So the bar is the strand of yarn that crosses over 3 stitches. Yes, it should be quite noticeable and easy to find.

Hope this helps,
Dot

Dot beat me to it. :teehee: I’ve made this type of pattern before and it’s beautiful. It took me a few tries to pick up the bar correctly, but once I did I loved the effect!

Do you have a link to the pattern? It helps us help you when asking questions.

Thank you all so much for your help. And so quickly too!!! The link to the pattern is below. There is a picture but you cant see the detail so well. Thanks again for your help.
