Non-pattern knitting for winter caps

Good day.

My grandson is in a rock music band and I thought for his birthday I could knit him a winter cap to wear during his local performances. I can’t find a pattern for an upside-down star like the one he wears on his shirt and the front of his drum set. Initially I thought I could do a double knit double colour but using the base color as black and embedding the white upside-down star has been difficult. Is there a way to plan this out on paper or any similar ideas on embedding an object into a knitted cap?

You can use knitter’s graph paper to plan out a design.

Intarsia knitting to work the star uses short rows in order to work in the round. It might be simpler to knit the cap flat then seam it.
