No stipulation on what cast on to use…

Hi there! I am starting the pattern with a Premier pattern called Chunky Cardi. I practically always use the cable cast on method. This pattern directions just say to cast on your amount of stitches (in my case it is 60 stitches). Work 10” even in st. St. stocking stitch.

Will I have a problem with using my cable cast on?

Cable cast on is a pretty and sturdy cast on. It should work well with this top down cardigan.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I usually ignore the cast on recommendation unless I see a good reason for it and use whatever cast on I think is best for the project. Is casting on in pattern possible with cable cast on?

Casting on in pattern for cable cast on depends what the pattern is. I generally don’t cast on in pattern but I do select the cast on based on some considerations of what I want the cast on to be like. With cable cast on there’s a bit of fiddling around moving stitches for say a 2x2 rib.

I like cable cast on, ts what I was taught but also what I have returned to after tying other cast ons. I also like Judy’s really stretchy slip knot cast on but it can be cumbersome for a large number of stitches as the yarn gets quite twisted, or untwisted.

I tend to use German Twisted (aka Old Norwegian) for just about everything. It looks nice and is stretchy without distorting. The only time I don’t use it is if an edge needs to be really solid and stable and NOT stretch. For those, I like the cable or knitted cast-on. Long-tail would probably be faster but it’s too similar to German Twisted and my muscle memory gets confused.

I saw a video last night where the lady was casting on with cable cast on in knit and purl so she could do the 1 x 1 ribbing.

I am replying here under my own answered question. The part I was wanting to mention is that this sweater is done in sections, so the back is knitted and then you have to pick up a knit some of the cast on stitches to complete the neck.

I have not done this kind of sweater before but I am going to try it out having cast on with the Cable Cast On and see what happens.

Here’s a video for the cable cast on in case you’d like to alternate knit and purl sts in the cast on.

Picking up along the cable cast on for the neck band to be worked is fine. Cable cast on is a bit bulkier than other cast ons so if you don’t want the extra thickness there you can use another cast on, long tail, or knit cast on for instance. When I use knit cast on I use a larger needle as I find it can be a bit tight otherwise. If you’re not sure you can swatch it. I go up 1 or 2 mm. Being exactly the same stretch as the stockinette would be great, being a touch too loose would be okay as the neckband will add stability and bring it back into size, being a touch too tight would be what I wanted to avoid it as it wouldn’t feel nice to have a tight area at the neck and it could end up a bit small too.
