I made this sweater from a little project that I started in about 2008 after I made some ballet socks for my niece. The bottom of the piece, which you cannot see is almost to my knees - hence the ‘dress’ added to the title. IT is a light grayish purple. I can’t remember how many sts I cast on way back then. I wasn’t on planning on doing anything with it other than make a tube until the yarn ran out. It sat around for quite a while until just before Christmas, when all my presents had been knitted or crochetted, I brought it out and knit it till just a little yarn was left… then I added another yarn I had on hand, but not much of it left either, only enough for about 3 or 4 rows… I decreased at the end of it every 10 stitches… having no idea how that would look or if it would even out… which it didn’t, but I didn’t care. It looked pretty.
Then I added another varigated yarn I had on hand… not the same weight as the other two but it looked good too… Then I decided it was time to put in the neckline… think I did that too soon but what the heck, it’s there now.
I was on straights by now and had divided them up into the back and the front of the piece. The right shoulder went onto some red yarn as a stitch holder and I knit the left shoulder right up til it hit the top of my shoulder when I tried it up against me.
Did the same with the right shoulder too.
Then I knit the back part leaving nothing there for a scoop so that part was really easy if time consuming.
then I sewed the shoulder seams together and the side seams, tho’ if I did it again, I would probably have left that til later.
I picked up on a circular needle, stitches around the neck edge and just plain knit them for about 3 or 4 rounds. They curve over nicely and add a nice finish to the neck.
The arms stymied me for a bit. What to do? I had no idea how to knit some sleeves so I decided to just pick up and knit the stitches around the sleeve edges so form a bit of an cap. I like this idea but I’m planning on taking these off again and putting them back on as k1,p1 rib so they will stand out better.
I’ve really meant to use this as a sweater with a turtle neck… or if anyone has any advice how I could do the arm holes better, or even some sleeves…

I think if I were a few years younger I would be tempted to wear it by itself with maybe a little something in the front to hide the naughty bits… 
It’s the first sweater I ever made with my own ideas… and really, I had nothing to lose… the yarn would just have gone to waste anyway.

I’d like to see a picture that shows the whole thing. This part is nice, but would be nice to see the rest. It’s nice that you finally finished it. I like the square neckline.
I think you did a great job! Maybe a fitted, crisp collared, button down shirt would be cute under it. I would try 3/4 or long sleeves.
I have since changed the sleeves to be short like they are but in a k1,p1 rib so it stays out a bit… may change that too, to 3/4 sleeves.
I also added a little piece across the front of the scoop neck so that it isn’t quite so low, tho I left the outline of the neckline the way it was.
LIke it better now but will eventually figure out how to put some sleeves into the darned thing… 3/4 is my preferrence since this is quite a warm sweater.
