Newby here with binding/stitching problems

I was noticing in the instructional videos, that when they are “binding off” that the main direction of the stitches looked vertical. I have been knitting a scarf for the past three days and finally have come to a good length. My problem is/ was that I knew only one stitch… just knitting, no purl or anything else. Also, all my stitches are directed horizontal… is it still okay to bind off like this???

I’m not sure what you mean about the stitches being directed vertical vs. horizontal, but you have to bind off in order to get your stitches off the needles. A basic knit bind-off should be just fine.

What you’re looking at in the video is stockinette stitch–where all the knit stitches are on one side and all the purls are on the other.

When you knit every row, the ridges–your horizontal-looking stitches, are purls–the back of a knit row is a purl row. So even though you knit every row, you’re creating a row of knit and a row of purl as you look at your scarf.

Bottom line? You can bind off. Your stitches are really the same as in the video, just distributed differently.
