Hi guys. I’m glad that i found this site. I’m trying to teach myself to knit from a book, and it’s driving me nuts. Thanks to the video about casting on on this site i finally got a little of the hang of it. The problem is that two or three will make nice, beautiful loops on the needle, and then one or two in a row will cross over the others, or knot up or something like that. What am i doing wrong?
Can we attach, for instance, videos here? If that’s the case, then i can post a video of myself casting on if that would help.
Hi Randal, welcome! I don’t know about attaching videos, but try this: when you cast on, stop and look at the stitch. Then do the next one, stop and look at it. That way, you’ll catch what you’re doing at that moment. You won’t always have to do it so stop and go, but just for the first few times, until you get it. The other thing, is that I’d try looking at other videos, try youtube, or the shop that advertises here, knitpicks. Sometimes watching it from a slightly different angle can help. Also, just know, every single knitter goes through this frustrating beginner bit! It’s not hard, but getting what you’re supposed to do can take a bit. Once you’ve got it though, you’re good!

I have to say though that I wouldn’t sweat it right now. Even tension comes with practice. So cast on your stitches however they are and start knitting. It will be uneven at first, too. Just keep going and don’t rip it out. Soon you’ll start to see a difference.
I have to agree with Jan. I just taught myself the long tail cast on and knit stitch this week after viewing the videos here on knittinghelp. After starting over and over again I decided to just keep knitting. It’s nice to look and see I’m improving everyday. :happydance:
That’s not silly, I taught myself as a teenager in the 60s from my mom’s ‘Learn to" Crochet, Knit, Tat’ on packaging string and tinkertoys I swiped from my little brother. Sharpened up they were a great size (probably about a 9 or so) to learn on.
