relatively new to knitting have mastered the hat and scarf now i’m knitting my fist sweater and am soooo stuck!
i have finished most of the back now the pattern wants me to do the neck
pattern reads:
neck shaping
next row (RS) work 32 sts, put next 21sts on holder(for neck), join new yarn, and work remaining 32sts.
next row (ws) work 32sts(of left sholder). turn
bind off 1 st at beginning of next 2 RS rows, working 1 WS row straight.
so i have worked 32 sts and have the next 21 on a stitch holder how do i join the new yarn and work the remainder 32 sts of the left shoulder. i am using a circular needle do i need to put the right shoulder sts on a stitch holder to free up a the needle so i can work the stitches of the left sholder. when i get to it when binding off on the left shoulder working 1 WS row straight what does that mean? do i bind off the first stitch on the RS, knit all sts on WS without binding off and then on the RS bind off first stitch again?
sorry for all the questions. understanding patterns are kinda tricky for me. thanks for any light you might be able to shine on my knitting problem:cheering:
To join a new strand of yarn, just start knitting with it, leaving a tail you can weave in later. You can leave the sts on the other shoulder on the circular while you work on the one shoulder; it makes a good stitch holder.
next row (ws) work 32sts(of left sholder). turn
bind off 1 st at beginning of next 2 RS rows, working 1 WS row straight.
After you get your new yarn end, knit across the rest of the sts. Turn and do the WS row. Then turn at the bound off sts and BO/dec at the beg of the RS for the neck edge, finish the row, turn and work the WS. Turn again and dec 1 more st on the neck edge (at the beg of the row) finish the row and work across on the WS again.
thanks for the help but if i’m keeping the stitches for the right shoulder on one of the needles of the cirular how can i use that needle to work the stitches for the left shoulder. get another knitting needle?
You can, but you only need the ends to knit on the shoulder sts, not the whole needle. The held stitches will be on the cord, pushed away from the ends. If it’s easier for you, put those sts on a holder too, or on another needle.
okay the left shoulder is done:woot: now i’m going back to the right side which i had hoped would be the same but it’s not. the only instruction it really gives is work as left shoulder but with reverse shaping?
this is the instructions for the left shoulder:
next row (ws) work 32sts(of left sholder). turn
bind off 1 st at beginning of next 2 RS rows, working 1 WS row straight. bind off remaining 30 sts in rib
**return to 32 sts(of right shoulder), ready to work ws row.
work as left shoulder but with reverse shaping
does this mean on the first WS row i should bind off the first stitch?
sorry still confused i worked it out and i don’t have the same amount of rows
Left side: Right side:
(row1) WS work all sts (row1) WS bind off 1st sts
(row2) RS Bind of 1st st (row2) RS work all sts
(row3) WS work all sts (row3) WS bind off 1st sts
(row4) RS Bind off 1st st (row4) RS work all sts
(row5) WS work all sts (row5) WS Cast off
(row6) RS Cast off
Don’t worry about being off 1 row, that’s the nature of doing shoulders and armhole shaping. It won’t be noticeable when you put it together, it’s only about 1/6 of an inch.
