Newbie requires help on a tricky bit of a pattern if possible

Hello everyone,

I have just returned to knitting, after a good 15 years away!!

I am knitting this at the moment, and have enjoyed doing it until i started the decrease on the arms!! Its a Wendy Skye pattern number 5573 the cardigan version!

the pattern says:

 1. Right side row - K1, sl 1, K1, psso, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
 2. K1, P2tog, patt to last 2 sts, P2tog, tbl, K1
 3. K1, sl 1, K1, psso, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1
 4. K1, P1, patt to last 2 sts, P1, K1.

Keeping sts correct as now set and working all decreases as set by last 4 rows, dec 1 st at each end of next and every foll alt row until 19 sts remain, then on foll 5 rows, finishing on a wrong side row.

then cast of remaining 9 sts.

Which i sort of understand to a point, but the bit where it says about decreasing at each end of next and every following alt row, do i have to work the 4 rows as described and also on the foll alt rows decrease again?

Ive done one of the sleeves following just the 4 row pattern dec, but im not entirely sure ive done the right thing!

Any help will be received with big thanks and will be totally appreciated!!

Sorry to bombard the forum with such a searching first post!!

many thanks
Karen xx

Yes, continue to work the 4 row repeat with decreases and at the same time, do the decreases at each end of the indicated rows. So if you call the next row, row 1 (whatever pattern row that may be), you would decrease on rows 1,3,5,7,9 etc until 19sts remain and then on each of the next 5 rows.
Perfect first post. Welcome to KH!

Thank you so much for your reply, i have had a couple of options put to me, and have a team of people offering me their takes on the pattern! Its not very clear considering it has “easy knit” on the front of the pattern!!

Most appreciated!!
