I’m so confused. I’m knitting my first hat with ear flaps and I have no idea what I’m supposed to do with this instructions.
Cast on 6 stiches. Knit these stiches and 23 stiches of Second Ear flap. Turn. Cast on 32 stitches. Turn. K23 of First ear flap. Turn. Cast on 6 stiches.
Do I cast on the 6 stiches using the needle that has my second ear flap on?
Turn? Does that just mean I’m doing a purl row?
You are so right. Those instructions make no sense at all. I found a really simple ear flap hat using bulky wht yarn at Knitty Gritty.It’s called the camo earflap hat on episode dkng 404 I have been knitting them on request from all the girls in my gd’s junior hischool class. I guess they are the latest craze. Ellie There is another pattern available on ther knitting pattern central website.
I think I can help you with these instructions. I am assuming you have
knitted two earflaps that have been put onto holders waiting to
be attached to the hat. So you will cast on 6 sts onto an
empty needle. Knit these sts and then knit the 23 held sts
from an earflap. This will give you 29 sts on the needle
(23 from the earflap + 6 co).
Then turn your work and using cable cast on or knitted cast on,
co 32 sts. (There will now be 61 sts on the needle) Turn you
work. K23 from the other earflap. (there are now 84 sts on the
needle). Turn your work and doing either cable co or knitted
co, cast on the remaining 6 sts. (There should be 90 sts total)
Clear as mud?

I have knitted a couple of earflap hats and those instructions make absolutely no sense to me at all.
Basically, you want your earflaps, then some stitches in between for the front of the hat, and then the second earflap, and then some stitches in between for the back of the hat. So you just load the first earflap, then cast on some stitches, then load the second earflap then cast on some more stitches, and if you are doing this on a circular needle you just join up and keep knitting.
