Hi everyone, I am going to try and make this http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/kpl-bafg.html?noImages=0. I’ve made a scarf already and it went well. I’m just wondering though, this calls for size 10.5 needles. Could I use 10 or 11? I have both of those sizes. I was going to crochet it, but the more I knit, the more I like it better. :XX: Please forgive if this is a silly question–I’ve only been knitting a couple of weeks.
Newbie knitter, help with needle size for pat
I think you could use either. Being exactly on gauge is not critical for a blanket like this, although your finished dimension will probably be a bit different than those listed. A size US 10 needle is 6mm, a 10 1/2 is 6.5 and an 11 is 8. So the 10 would be closer, but if you knit tight or want the blanket a bit larger or looser, use the 11. You might also decide based on the length of your needles - use the longer one(s) since you will have a lot of stitches on it!
Good luck and happy knitting! :XX:
Thanks Jennifer!
I started it out on my 11’s but with casting on 87 the needles filled right up. Would it be a good idea to get a set of circulars and use the cable to help hold it all bc when I got to the 3rd row it was impossible to keep it on the needles.
What length of circular needles should I use?
If you plan on using them mostly as straights, the longer the better. If you think you might use them later for a sweater, then a 24 or 29 would work, too.
I may just go for really long ones then… I’m going to try out my SIL’s Denise set and may ask for that for my birthday. I just want to get this afghan done and need to get going on it before my birthday. LOL
I appreciate the help! I just finished a beginner scarf today and I’m maiking my kiddo a poncho… I am enjoying learning to knit! :XX:
Be very, very careful! It’s extraordinarily addictive!
Well, I went to Hobby Lobby twice this week. So I needed to be warned a long time ago. :roflhard: I should go back tomorrow and get the circular needle…
At least with the knit and crochet implements half off I can collect things cheaply.
From what I’ve read many craft-type stores like Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, AC Moore, etc., often don’t carry a very good variety of circular needles.
I’ll cross my fingers for you!
Hmm, where should I get a set of circulars? Do I need to order online? I have some time, so it’s not like I need them immediately.
Is there a locally owned yarn store near you? If not, the internet has an endless number of options. CarolOH is a member on this board. Carol owns Taraknits, a company that sells used needles. She has a great selection and the shipping is really inexpensive. There is a link on the site here somewhere, or you can find her post in buy/sell/swap.
Just bought some 32" circulars from ebay. DUH. Ebay has everything, so why not check there. I got a pair of Addi’s. I’ve heard people really like them so I’ll give them a go.
I’ll bookmark that taraknits site for the future though! Thanks!
