I’m teaching myself to knit and I have some mental block about knitting and purling in the same row. I can knit a row and purl a row, but together there must be something I’m missing. Is there some trick to knitting and purling in the same row, like in moss stitch?

Please Help!

Amy has a video here under basic stitch patterns. Try following along with needles and yarn in hand. HTH

no trick that I know of. just make sure that when you are purling you have your yarn in the front of the needle and when knitting have your yarn at the back. (you will be constantly changing the yarns start position)

hope this helps!

Just make sure that you bring the yarn between the needles instead of over the needles. :thumbsup:

…or under the needles like I did when first trying ribbing. :oops:

I had been knitting for years before I mastered this (last week!) I couldn’t understand where I was going wrong and couldn’t grasp it no matter how many people told me.

So;

K1
Then bring your wool under the right hand needle to the front
P1
Then take your wool back under the right hand needle to the back

etc ( I use the mantra knit, forward, pearl, back)

The way you can see what you are doing (or if you’re doing it right in my case) is that after your knit 1 you will have a stitch on your right needle that is “open” (with no horizontal stitch across the loop on your needle) and after you pearl one you will have a loop on your right needle that has a horizontal (parallel with your right needle) stitch at the front of it. (This may seem silly but I always forget which stitch I just did and it’s annoying when you get to the end of a row and realise you’ve been doing it wrong).

Good luck - once I did it I couldn’t realise why i’d found it so hard!

Move your yarn under the needle tip.
