New Wanna Be Knitter ~ English or Continental Method?

I am a “thrower” too. I was up until 4 am trying to teach myself to knit and because I am right-handed, it felt very comfy for me. I tried continental and it was like me trying to write with my left hand. I hear that it’s faster to knit continental and I will eventually give it another try. Good luck!

Some say that handedness has little to do with knitting.

I can knit both ways, and I do use them both at the same time when I knit with two colors, but I feel most happy with English. I don’t “throw” the yarn though - it’s a smooth motion for me. I think it probably feels most natural for me only because I learned that way first. In my opinion, for whatever it’s worth, I think you should just pick one and practice it and chances are, you’ll be happy with it.

I originally learned English, but taught myself continental when my wrists started hurting. I think continental is definitely faster, especially if you’re knitting stockinette in the round. I use both and don’t have a favorite, I often do one then switch to the other when my hands get tired. I would vote for learning to do both, even if you do one more than the other, knowing both really helps when knitting with two colors! Good luck, glad you’re joining the knitting world :cheering:

Continental here I tried the throw method and my tension was horrible… I didn’t like it at all… I think you should try both and then see which flows better for you… I gave throw method a good month or more before I switched…

Okay, I’m learning to knit, and I have been using the English Method…but I’m wondering, having read this thread, if the severe neck cramping I am getting is due to the high level of tension from using the “throwing” method. Would switching to Continental help? :XX:

Same here. I was “watching” myself knit the other day with a more critical eye and I find I sort of dip my left needle down to meet the yarn coming over from the right hand. Hard to explain, but it’s fluid and pretty fast…at least for someone whos only been knitting since October.

Isn’t it fascintaing that there are so many ways to do the same thing?

Im always :?? when people say they knit conti because they are left handed – I am right handed, and when I knit conti my right hand does all the work. My left hand just sits there holding the yarn. And the left needle of course.
