New Traditions Afghan Kit on knitpicks

Has anyone tried this New Traditions Afghan Kit that’s posted on knitpicks? I keep thinking about this afghan. I’m either going to buy it OR try to replicate it in some way by making my own pattern and color choices.

Haven’t tried it but have looked at it - it’s beautiful!!

What Wanda said.

I love it but it looks beyond me.

I really wish it came in other color choices. Those don’t go anywhere in my home. I use all reds & blues. (((HUGS)))Verna

I’m working on this kit right now, I really love the way it looks. It’s going a little slowly because I’m probably just an advanced beginner even if I like to think of myself as intermediate. The afghan consists of 12 squares, you knit 6 each of two different designs. There are a lot of color changes and you change direction by picking up and knitting stitches from the other sections (I think this may be how log cabin is done? Haven’t made a log cabin afghan so I can’t speak with authority). I find picking up the stitches a little difficult because many of the other sections (the diagonal and triangular ones) consist of decreases where it’s hard (for me) to see how and where to pick up the stitch.

Also if you don’t like weaving in ends, this may not be the pattern for you! Goodness I have never seen so many ends! I was tempted to just leave them hanging as some sort of bonus fringe

But all in all I’m not finding it too difficult and the picking-up-stitches thing is a good skill to cultivate, I’m really enjoing the pattern.

I just saw this kit in the new Knit Picks catalog and would love to do it, only in different colors and in machine washable wool. Is there any way of getting the pattern without buying the kit? I think I saw some quilt type patterns once in one of those Mason Dixon knitter books and should look again. But not this particular one.

Knit Picks often releases the patterns for their kits once the kits themselves sell out.

Thanks for the notes on the ends, Chuwo, that honestly never crossed my mind, but like many others, I’d love to make this item just with a different color scheme. But the ends…Hmmm…I’m such a terrible finisher (love to knit, not so keen on the finishing), will have to rethink this.

LOL…Lunatic Fringe! I know you’re out there…

I saw what you said about at all the ends, I totally agree! I hate weaving ends with a passion. I’ve posted this before but it totally changed my knitting life so I thought I would repost. How to weave in ends while knitting.

I can’t wait to see your FO!

Holly, thank you for the link to the tutorial! I think I have actually seen this before, but never tried it. I think this project is definitely a good candidate for utilizing that weaving-in technique. I’m a bit uncoordinated with things like this but I’m going to try it!
