New to knitting -rib hat

Hi. I’m knitting my first hat. I’m at the stage of shaping the crown and I don’t understand the directions. What does this mean?
1st row- *Rib 1, K2 together, Rib 17, K2 tog; Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row- Rib.
Thanks.

HI Jellyko,
Rib 1 means work the first stitch in the same rib pattern you have been using to make your hat. Are you doing a K1,P1 rib or a K2,P2 rib or some other combination ?
Whichever style rib you are using, for Row 1: work the first stitch as usual then K2 tog, work another 17 sts in the ribbed pattern you have been using keeping the ridges and troughs in line then K2tog the next 2 sts; repeat this sequence to the end of the row.
Row 2: work this row in the same rib pattern you have been using
Hope this helps :grinning:

Thank you so much. I will give it a try!

Ok Injust reread your message. I’ve been doing K1P1 throughout the rows.

So would I knit1, then knit two stitches together and the Knit 1 purl 1 for 17 stitches and then knit two stitches together and repeat to end of row???

Yes, that’s right. Check after a K2tog that you start with the correct stitch to maintain the pattern.
If you are knitting the 1st stitch, then K2tog the next 2 sts(P+K), the following stitch will be a purl :grinning:

Thank you.
