New to knitting, have a few questions

hi. i was wanting to knit my boyfriend a scarf for xmas, but it’s been years since i’ve knitted and i’ve pretty much forgotten. i think i’ve got the basics thanks to this site, but i had a couple questions. what difference does the gauge of needle make? i’m assuming it makes the knit tighter? i don’t want it to be too coarse, so should i get a small gauge and thin fabric? also, i was wondering if it would be possible to work in a small shape in a different colour. i don’t know if that would be too complicated with switching colours, or if it would look good from both sides? how could i go about doing this?

thank you,
sarah

gauge is changed by either going up or down in needle sizes and it will make the weave of the knit fabric either looser or tighter. If you dont want it to be coarse then get your normal ww 4ply yarn and a size 8, 9 or 10 needles, the bigger the needle number the looser the weave. on a scarf I wouldn’t change colors unless you do it at the beggining of a row and end it an the end of a row because scarfs need to be pretty on both sides (in my opinion)…now you could do double knit, Amy has a video abou this and then you could add shapes in different colors or writing or whatever-I’ve not done this yet. Hope that helps.
If you have a LYS (local yarn shop) near by then I’d go chat with them, they could reccomend some yummy yarn and tell you what needles are best. good luck

thank you  i’ll have to look up double knitting. i’m not sure if we have a yarn shop here. if not is there anywhere else i could get supplies? i don’t have a CC so i can’t order online. thanks again.

Do you have a crafts store like Joann Fabrics, Michaels, Hobby lobby or Hancock Fabrics? They have yarn also. Then there’s Walmart. Where are you located?
