New to group and needing help

Greetings all,
I am new to the group and a novice knitter. I am working on a turtle neck sweater and have run into a disturbing situation. On the neck shaping stage I had one side on the stitches on a stitch holder while I worked the other side down to fastening off the last stitch there. I then cut the yarn and fastened off. Directions then said: with RS of work facing slip next 12 stitches onto stitch holder and proceed as follows… Here’s the problem, now that I have these other 19 stitches on my needle and the 12 in the middle on the stitch holder, I don’t have any attached yarn from the yarn ball to begin knitting the stitches on the needle !! What on earth have I done wrong, and is it fixable?
Thanks for any and all answers.

You’ve done absolutely nothing wrong-- this is precisely what is supposed to happen. The directions just forgot to mention 1 little detail-- you have to reattach the yarn. Most patterns will say it, but some don’t. So just take your yarn, leave a few inches of a tail, and begin knitting (or purling, or whatever you’re supposed to be doing) and go a couple of stitches. What I do, is stop at this point and in the back of my work, tie the little tail to the working yarn. Otherwise, those new stitches will be quite loose and drive you a little nuts. Then just keep going.

Thanks sooo much for your quick response!
What a wonderful place this forum is indeed!
