I’m a new sock knitter and I was wondering if anybody out there
has an easy way to start toe first socks?

First, welcome to the world of sock knitting! May I suggest you join the ANY SOCK KAL? There’s no time limit and there’s some REALLY helpful people there who can give input and encouratement about sock knitting.
Second, Silver’s toe-up two at once sock tutorial is good, but I use the Turkish Cast on instead of the figure-8 one she shows. I DEFINITELY recommend that you use magic loop!
The Magic Caston mentioned in Knitty is a no-fail one for me.
