Help. I’m a brand new knitter and I can do the knit stitch and the purl stitch but after I walk away and pick it back up, I can’t determine which stitch I used on the last row. Thanks!
If you’re working in stockinette–knit one row, purl one row–you can look at your knitting and tell. If the smooth V side is facing you, then you are going to knit that row; if the purl bumps are facing you, you’ll purl that row.
Thank you so much. I’ll try it tonight.

And don’t forget to mark the “right”, or public, side of your work. Anything will do, a safety pin, a chunk of yarn in a different color, anything you can remove at the end of the project. Even experienced knitters working in complex patterns have been known to pick up work in progress and go “Uh-oh…was that row a front or back?”
Thanks Ingrid. I tried it and it worked beautifully. Now I have a chance!!
