New knitter

Hello everyone, I’m a new knitter and knitting a baby cardigan from the Newborn by Sue Batley-Kyle called flat pack Jill Cardie.

Can someone please help me with the shape neck instructions. Once I’ve slipped the first 7 stitches onto a holder how much yarn should I leave. Also what’s the best way to join the yarn to continue with the remaining stitches.
Hope this makes sense
Many thanks
Pragna

Welcome to the forum and to knitting!

Do you have a second ball of yarn? If so, it might be best to use that ball of yarn for the rest of the row rather than pulling off enough yarn for the collar from the current ball. It’s difficult to tell how much yarn you’ll need without knowing the gauge, length and kind of collar.
If you don’t have a second ball of yarn then look at the stitch count for the collar and measure off that number of sts along the back of the cardigan. Then measure off a length of yarn along that length and multiply by 4. That may give you enough yarn or close to it.
There are several ways of joining a new ball of yarn. Here’s one that is easy enough to do. You don’t need to join for 3 sts, one or two will do. Just remember to knit the double loops together as a single stitch when you come to them.

Thank you so much. I was thinking of using another ball of yarn but wasn’t sure as the pattern said leave enough yarn.
Thank you for the video really helpful.

OK, another ball of yarn is the best solution. Have fun working this sweater.

(for winding off the yarn from the current ball, it would take about 4 x the length of the sts per row of the collar.)
