Hello, I’m starting a new project and I totally get the first part of the project because it is just garter stitch. However the next part says on WS P1 row from WS and continue in M1 with 1 edge st in garter st each side beg with K1 after edge st).
I’m so unsure of what I do. Can someone help?

You should figure out which is the right side (RS) and which the wrong side (WS) of the project. On the next WS row, purl across the row. I would keep the edge sts as garter stitch (knit the first and the last stitches).
Is M1 a chart or stitch pattern?
Can you give us a link to the pattern or a pattern name?
